Thai Government Spokesperson Chai Wacharonke said Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has asked the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives to propose a draft ministerial regulation on durian standards to maintain durian export quality, and Prevent harvesting unripe or poor quality durians for sale.

According to regulations, durian must be packaged and certified to ensure quality standards by meeting the minimum requirements for dry weight of durian pulp, specifically for the Monthong durian variety at 32%, Chanee is at 30% and Kra Dum is at 28%. This regulation is expected to take effect in one year.

The Thai government believes that promulgating the above standards will help the country’s durian exporters maintain quality standards and competitiveness.

Thailand is the leading durian exporter in the world market with the durian harvest season lasting from March to August, peaking in May. In 2023, Thailand’s durian output will reach 900,000 tons, of which about 300,000 tons are for domestic consumption and most of the remaining is exported to China.

Thailand’s durian export turnover in 2023 is up to 120 billion baht (about 3.27 billion USD) and the country aims to increase durian export value to 1,000 billion baht in the future.
