On August 19, the Department of Industry and Trade coordinated with the Multilateral Trade Policy Department to organize a conference to deploy the development of an ecosystem to take advantage of FTAs to support the production, processing and consumption of cinnamon products in Yen Bai province in 2024.
Attending the conference were representatives of the Multilateral Trade Policy Department – Ministry of Industry and Trade; Department of International Cooperation – Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association, Department of Industry and Trade of some provinces; Leaders of some relevant departments, branches and sectors of the province; business households and enterprises operating in cinnamon production and trading in the three districts of Van Chan, Van Yen, Tran Yen.
Currently, Yen Bai has over 80,000 hectares of cinnamon in 3 districts: Tran Yen, Van Yen, Van Chan (Van Yen district alone has over 55,000 hectares, planted in 25/25 communes and towns of the district). The concentrated cinnamon area is over 30,000 hectares, the certified organic cinnamon area is over 7,000 hectares. In Van Yen district, there are 14 cinnamon essential oil processing facilities, 205 cinnamon bark processing and manufacturing facilities, 04 cinnamon handicraft production facilities, 212 facilities and households producing and trading cinnamon varieties. The total output of dry cinnamon bark is over 6,000 tons/year, the average cinnamon leaf production is 65,500 tons/year, and the cinnamon wood output is over 60,000 m3/year.
In recent times, the province’s general export activities have gradually stabilized and increased, with the total export value in the province in the first 7 months of 2024 reaching 236 million USD, an increase of 30% over the same period (equivalent to 54 million USD). Of which, the group of processed agricultural and forestry products is estimated at 82 million USD, of which direct cinnamon exports are estimated at 2.1 million USD, indirect exports are estimated at 10.27 million USD. According to the assessment of the professional sector, this value is still very low compared to the potential, strengths and value of cinnamon trees.
Along with that, currently, most of the province’s cinnamon products are exported by enterprises through intermediaries, so the price and market are unstable, the value is not high. Therefore, in order to have measures to promote exports, increase the value of cinnamon products, it is necessary to have measures from the stage of seedlings to finished products for export, the combination of supply chains, and consumption nationwide. Building a cinnamon ecosystem is a practical requirement, a solution proposed by the Ministry of Industry and Trade to create leverage to promote development and remove difficulties in connecting the processing chain; production process, capital and technology; building brands…
The representative of Nam Muoi commune, Van Chan district, hopes that people will be guided to grow cinnamon to ensure quality according to standards. At the same time, he requested the relevant agencies to have sustainable output solutions for cinnamon products.
The conference spent a lot of time focusing on exchanging, reflecting, discussing, drawing experiences and difficulties encountered in the production, processing, import and export of cinnamon.
