Late 2020 – early 2021 is the period when Namibia and South Africa export fresh grapes to Europe, while the North American market is supplied mainly by Peru, Chile and California (USA). Namibia and South Africa started their grape season later this year, so the supply was limited at the beginning of the season in Europe, pushing prices up. However, the situation has changed since January 2021, when the supply of grapes increased and the prices stabilized.
At the end of February – early March 2021, the demand for Peruvian and Chilean grapes in the Mexican market reached a very high level, while in Canada, the US and Asia also increased.
Grape yield America this year is expected to increase 100,000 tons over last year, to 1 million tons; exports are expected to drop to 305,000 tons, mainly due to lower demand from Mexico; while imports are expected to drop to 650,000 tonnes as production in Mexico this year declines cyclically.
Grape yield Turkey 2020/21 is expected to decrease slightly to 2.0 million tons due to summer hail in the Aegean region causing loss in both yield and quality. The country’s grape exports are therefore forecast to drop to 200,000 tonnes, due to a drop in exports to the Middle East, although exports to key markets, Russia and Ukraine, remain stable.
Grape yield European Union (EU) in 2020/21 is forecast to drop 170,000 tons to 1.4 million tons as Italy – the top grape producer in the region – experiences severe frosts during the period of vines flowering, after it is hail and showers in the fall. Grape exports in this season are forecast to be a record low, at only 75,000 tons, due to a drop in supplies. This will be the 7th consecutive year that EU grape exports decline.
Grape yield Peru This year is expected to be 20% higher than last year, reaching about 665,000 tons, thanks to favorable weather conditions.
Demand for importing Peruvian grapes from markets in the Northern Hemisphere continues to increase, encouraging the grape industry to increase its planting area, especially high quality grape varieties. Peruvian grape export this year is forecast to increase 15,000 tons to 415,000 tons thanks to increased output.
Grape yield Chile for the current crop year was originally projected at 85 million barrels, but now revised down to 65 million barrels (785,000 tons). Chilean grape production has been on a downward trend since 2012/2013.
As of February 1, 2021, Chile exported 4.7 million barrels of grapes, down 39% from the same period last year.
Grape yield Russia marketing year 2020/21 is expected to decrease slightly to 23,000 tons due to weather factors. The acreage remains largely unchanged as the vine industry invests in wine production rather than fresh food. It is forecasted that Russia will import 310,000 tons of grapes, of which imports from Turkey and Uzbekistan will increase.
Grape yield South Africa crop year 2020/21 is estimated to increase by around 8,000 tons to 330,000 tons thanks to favorable weather. The vine-growing area in South Africa continues to expand, especially in the North, the Western Cape region tends to shift from wine-making to fresh grapes. Grape exports in the 2020/21 crop year are estimated to increase by 7,000 tons to 305,000 due to the increased output, facilitating increased exports to the European Union, even after the year-end festive season.
Exports of grapes India a further decline in 2021 is expected as the Covid-19 epidemic affects demand, especially in Europe. The cost of exports also increased due to the disease. Export of grapes from India to Europe for several years has continuously decreased in volume. Exports in 2020 will decrease by about 25% compared to the previous year, and by 2021 it is expected to decrease by about 10-15% compared to 2020 because of the Covid-19 epidemic.
Grape yield China crop year 2020/21 is forecast to increase slightly by 400,000 tons to 11 million tons due to continued application of advanced technology in the production process. Shine Muscat and Xiahei are the two most popular grape varieties being grown in China with increasing yields.
Grape yield Australia crop year 2020/21 is forecast to increase 15,000 tons to 240,000 because of very good growth conditions of the vines. If nothing is in the way, grape exports are forecast to continue to increase, adding 17,000 tons this year to 17,000 tons, mainly to Asian markets.
