According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, in the context that pepper exports continue to face many difficulties and great competitive pressures, the new-generation free trade agreements that Vietnam has recently signed such as CPTPP and EVFTA are evaluated. Price is an opportunity to expand exports for the pepper industry.
Import and Export Department said that according to statistics from the General Department of Customs, pepper export in November reached 17 thousand tons, worth 40 million USD, down 0.3% in volume and 2.8% in value. compared to October.
Accumulated from the beginning of the year to the end of November, pepper export reached 267.3 thousand tons, valued at 674.27 million USD, up 21.4% in volume, but down 6.1% in value compared to 11 months. 2018.
The average export price of pepper reached US $ 2,522 / ton, down 22.7% compared to the first 11 months of 2018.
For pepper, the CPTPP has 9 countries committed to immediately eliminate tariffs including Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Chile, Peru, Japan.
Particularly, the Mexican market committed to eliminate tax according to the 16-year roadmap for green pepper. Notably, among the CPTPP countries, only Malaysia is a country with significant pepper production, however, the export percentage is not much, only about 3% of global exports.
Therefore, the Ministry of Industry and Trade stated that Vietnamese pepper has a comparatively competitive advantage in CPTPP countries.
For EVFTA, EU countries commit to eliminate tariffs on pepper products as soon as the agreement comes into effect. Therefore, the Ministry of Industry and Trade believes that the effective EVFTA will be a good lever for Vietnamese enterprises to increase exports to EU countries.
Thus, for pepper, the negotiations on market opening on tariffs and rules of origin have been well implemented in recent years.
Therefore, in order to make good use of the above-mentioned opportunities, the Ministry of Industry and Trade recommends that enterprises should actively seek information about the Agreements in order to firmly grasp commitments between Vietnam and partner markets, especially especially information on tariff preferences, quality requirements, and rules of origin.
In addition, in fact, the price of pepper will depend on the type of seed as well as the quality of the pepper, so in order to improve the selling price for pepper, the core measure lies in the cultivation and post-harvest stages. .
“Therefore, the pepper industry needs to innovate its growth model in the coming time, focusing on quality right from the raw material stage to create high-quality products and participating in high value-added markets. to improve the value and economic efficiency, ”said the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
