From February to April every year is the main harvest time for pepper in Vietnam, so at this time, importers often find ways to squeeze prices, put many quality barriers to achieve the purpose of buying. Big quantity with cheap price. Therefore, the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA) recommends that pepper growers should avoid selling large quantities of pepper during the period of time to avoid further losses.
According to VPA, due to the impact of domestic and foreign import and export, pepper prices have decreased from 160,000-170,000 VND / kg at the end of 2013 to over 120,000 VND / kg today.
Meanwhile, pepper prices in India, Indonesia, Malaysia … and major consumption markets such as the US and Europe in early 2014 remained high at US $ 8,000 / ton (black pepper) and over 10,000. US dollars / ton (white pepper).
Vietnam is a world leader in both output and exports of pepper. In 2013, Vietnam's pepper production accounted for 30% of the world total and the export market share accounted for 50%. Therefore, according to VPA, Vietnam has strengths in regulating pepper prices in the market to sell at high prices.
VPA said that, often at the beginning of the pepper harvest, farmers had to sell to pay money to pay debts and consume, so a large amount of pepper was sold to the market at this time, and thus brought down the price of these agricultural products.
On March 13, pepper prices in the Southeast and Central Highlands provinces were at VND 123,000 – 127,000 / kg.
In early March, VPA conducted a survey in six pepper growing provinces and then made a forecast of 2014 national pepper output of about 120,000-125,000 tons, equivalent to the output of the 2013 crop. Nai is estimated to increase by 20%, equivalent to 2,500 tons, Ba Ria-Vung Tau is estimated to increase by 30%, equivalent to 3,500 tons, Binh Phuoc decreases by 20%, equivalent to 5,000 tons, Dak Nong increases by 25% (equivalent to 3,500 tons, Dak Lak increased by 5%, equivalent to 800 tons, Gia Lai decreased by 30%, equivalent to 8,000 tons compared to 2013.
Mr. Do Ha Nam, VPA President said, in 2013, world pepper output is 340,000 tons, and forecast this year, the world's pepper output is similar to the previous year.
According to the Agriculture and Rural Development Sector, in the first 2 months of 2014, the export volume reached 19,000 tons, worth US $ 132 million, down more than 8% in volume and 5.5% in value. Three markets, Singapore, USA and India, accounted for nearly 50% of Vietnam's export pepper in the first two months of this year.
