The survey area is the districts with large area of pepper cultivation in the province, namely Bu Dop district (Binh Phuoc); Dak R’Lap (Dak Nong), Cu Kuin and Ea H’Leo (Dak Lak) and Dak Doa and Chu Puh (Gia Lai).

In each district, the delegation conducted working with the agricultural management agencies of the District Agriculture Offices, leading the People's Committees of the districts to obtain information about the local pepper production situation.

The results of working with 20 farmer households and 16 officials of the Agricultural Extension and Plant Protection Stations and district agricultural officials show that:

Pepper garden is invested and cared for

first.Compared to 2015, the area of new pepper growing in 2016 increased by 15-20%. Most of the newly planted area replaces coffee and rubber. However, at present, the new growing trend tends to decrease. The crop to farmers said they only replanted old gardens, not new ones because farmers began to fear no output

2.Since 2010/2012, the price of pepper is getting better day by day, so all places are speeding up the area. This area is about 10 – 20% of the total area (only a newly developed district like Dak Doa, this area accounts for 90% of the total pepper area of the district) is starting to harvest the main crop of 2016/2017 in the month. 2-4 coming with high productivity, an average of 5 tons / ha

3.However, it is expected that pepper gardens over 10 years, the yield of the 2016/2017 crop will be about 30% lower than the 2015/2016 crop, especially in the districts that have developed perennial pepper like Chu Se and Chu Puh. (Gia Lai), Ea Ktur Cu Kuin (Dak Lak) productivity decreased by 60-70%, with many gardens almost without fruit. The cause is thought to be due to the first drought of 2016, most of the root pepper plantations die irreversibly although this pest is less harmful than the previous year and is still very well cared for.

4.Combining both the area just started for exploitation and the old area of productivity decreasing, it is estimated that the output of the new crop in 2016/2017 will increase by 15-20% compared to the output of the 2015/2016 crop. Therefore, 2017 Vietnam's pepper output is estimated at about 180,000 tons;

5.About 60% of the interviewed households said they still stockpiled, averaging several tons per household.

6.All farmers and district agricultural management officials are quite aware of the situation of pepper industry, especially the problem of residues of banned substances and the need for sustainable farming, so 100% of farmers knowing that they want the pepper garden to develop sustainably, they mainly use manure mixed with composting probiotics to fertilize the plants and extremely minimize the use of plant protection drugs. In this case, there were very few pests and diseases, pepper plants were lined with stable manure, so they did not need to use medicine, especially they did not use Carbendazim.

7.In addition, all surveyed farmers showed that they mastered the techniques of planting, most of them no longer focused on increasing productivity at all costs as many years ago. using live poles, pruning, creating canopy to create a cool environment, moisturizing in the dry season, making drainage ditches in the rainy season, investing in irrigation systems to actively supply water for plants, making nets for pepper gardens silk etc. so the pepper gardens are growing quite well, sustainably, the quality of pepper next time will surely be improved.

8.All major pepper growing areas are stepping up the deployment of self-linked farmers and cooperating with enterprises to produce clean pepper because farmers are starting to worry about the oversupply time, importing countries. Due to the fact that the export requires clean pepper, if production is done in the old direction, only focusing on productivity will have no output.

The pepper garden lacks care investment in Dak Doa Gia Lai

9.However, farmers are very worried because of the current management of seeds, fertilizers and pesticides, these companies trading in input materials often advertise sharply, causing information disturbances that make ND indistinguishable. What kind of chemical? How to use it? Will cause residues, affecting the quality of export pepper.

ten.The 2016/2017 pepper crop is expected to harvest later this year than the previous year due to the early drought this year, late May-June rainfall, which will affect the early flowering. In the Southeast and Central Highlands, currently pepper is not really sure. At the end of the year, the harvest time this year of the Central Highlands provinces continues to have rain, affecting the ND collection is expected to begin harvesting in February 2017, harvest in March.
