EVFTA brings opportunities for Vietnamese rice

According to rice traders, the EVFTA has opened up many opportunities for Vietnamese rice exports to major markets, creating a competitive advantage for Vietnamese rice in the world market. The evidence is that over the past 6.5 months, Vietnam’s export rice price is leading and stabilizing at a relatively high level, the highest among the four traditional rice exporting countries, namely Vietnam, Thailand, Pakistan and India. Degree.

“Vietnamese rice exports in major markets are more competitive than rice from India and Thailand. In 2022, Vietnamese rice will continue to benefit from free trade agreements (FTAs), especially the EVFTA Agreement” – Mr. Pham Thai Binh, General Director of Trung Hi-Tech Agriculture Joint Stock Company. Ann, comment.

In June 2022, Loc Troi Group exported 500 tons of fragrant rice with Loc Troi’s own brand, “Vietnamese Rice” to the EU. Rice is shipped by sea to three countries: Germany, the Netherlands and France. In the future, Vietnamese rice will “cover” in EU countries thanks to its outstanding quality.

According to Ms. Vu Thi Hue – Head of Import-Export Sales Department, Ocean Green Import-Export Co., Ltd., since the implementation of the EVFTA Agreement, the opportunity to export Vietnamese rice in the EU market is huge. The EVFTA has brought tax incentives to help Vietnamese rice prices to the EU have a much more competitive advantage, creating opportunities for Vietnamese enterprises to increase their rice export market share in the EU market.

The most obvious proof is that this year, many enterprises have exported the whole ship with a large quantity of thousands of tons, instead of the previous small quantity of only a few hundred tons.

According to the Vietnam Trade Office in Sweden, rice is the most obvious growth commodity in recent years to Northern Europe and the amount of rice imported into Sweden from Vietnam has increased significantly after the EVFTA Agreement took effect. Recently, Jappnica rice has also successfully entered the Swedish market.

Restructuring to conquer the world market with quality

Dr. Tran Ngoc Thach – Director of the Mekong Delta Rice Institute – said that the Mekong Delta is the main rice-producing region of the country, with an average annual output of about 24 million tons and supplying over 90% of the rice production. rice export volume of Vietnam.

However, rice industry experts said that Vietnam still dominates the long-grain white rice segment, not exploiting the niche market well for the segments of premium aromatic rice, japonica rice, nutrient-rich rice and rice. organic rice. The raw rice area has not been built and the production organization has not yet been able to meet the requirements on residues of pesticides and other standards on food hygiene and safety; the origin and purity of rice has not been traced to ensure the stability of rice quality; The brand and standard of rice for each product has not yet been established. To export sustainably, Vietnam must solve all these problems.

Mr. Tran Thanh Hai – Deputy Director of the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) also emphasized: To ensure that fragrant rice exported to the EU enjoys incentives, it must be certified to ensure the correct variety. Therefore, enterprises must have a farming area to ensure the right variety and quality, and to comply with the commitments of the EVFTA.

Currently, the rice industry is being strongly restructured in the direction of increasing value, reducing cultivated area, and developing sustainably. Therefore, according to Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien, in the coming time, the ministry will coordinate with localities and businesses to focus on building brands for Vietnam’s rice industry. while continuing to implement mechanisms, policies and solutions to build a complete rice value chain, serving sustainable export.

“Vietnam’s rice exports in 2022 are relatively good. With the current situation of food scarcity in the world, including rice, Vietnam’s rice exports from now until the end of the year will be good. The Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Vietnam Food Association forecast that in 2022, they will export about 6.3-6.4 million tons of rice, an increase of about 20,000 tons compared to last year. It is worth mentioning that prices are relatively stable.”
