In the first half of 2020, Vietnam’s pepper imports decreased by more than 34% compared to the same period last year. Imports from major markets also dropped sharply.

According to preliminary statistics of the Vietnam Pepper Association, in the first 6 months of 2020, Vietnam imported 14,899 tons of pepper including 11,283 tons of black pepper and 3,616 tons of white pepper. Compared to the same period in 2019, the import volume decreased by 34.3%.

Vietnam imported mainly pepper from Brazil, Indonesia and Cambodia accounting for 89.6%, of which the import from Brazil 100% black pepper reached 5,802 tons, down 34.9%; imports from Indonesia reached 5,528 tons (of which 2,057 tons were black pepper and 3,471 tons were white pepper), down 50.4% over the same period.

There are 50 importers of pepper, of which enterprises of the Pepper Association account for 78.7%, leading the import is Olam Vietnam accounting for 34.4%, followed by Harris Freeman accounting for 8.9%, Nedspice. accounted for 8.3%.

The volume of enterprises outside the Vietnam Pepper Association imported accounted for 21.3%. Vietnam’s pepper exports in six months returned at 423 tons, down 49% compared to the same period last year.

The association said global pepper trade is seriously affected by the COVID-19 epidemic, which is forecast to reduce purchasing power in the coming months from Europe and the US. In addition, natural disasters in China, Vietnam’s major import market for pepper, will impact the country’s import demand for pepper in the short term.
