This is the information given at the Vietnam Coffee International Conference in 2022 and welcoming international coffee importers into Vietnam for purchase transactions held on December 11th.
With the goal of creating a forum for discussion, sharing information on export markets, and identifying opportunities and challenges, the participants assessed the production and trade capacity of the coffee industry to meet the requirements. of the export market, fostering interest in the development of world coffee.
The activity falls within the framework of the National Program on Trade Promotion, chaired by the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association, in collaboration with relevant ministries, branches and agencies every year.
Vietnam’s coffee industry has made great progress
According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, Vietnam’s coffee exports in November were estimated at about 110,000 tons, up 2.6% over the same period last year. Total coffee export value in 11 months of 2022 is estimated at 3.6 billion USD, up 31.5% over the same period last year.
Assessing this result, according to Mr. Nguyen Nam Hai, Chairman of the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association, with the leading coffee consumption market like Asia, Vietnamese businesses have quickly adapted, effectively exploit and take advantage of opportunities brought by free trade agreements, quickly regain lost market share and gradually expand export turnover.
In particular, Vietnamese enterprises are gradually increasing the export of processed coffee, reducing dependence on raw coffee exports, opening up a positive prospect for the coffee industry.
“In the last 3 years, the coffee industry’s deep processing has gradually developed. In deep processing, the total export turnover accounted for about 15% of the total coffee export turnover of the crop year. This is an encouraging result, because all businesses have boldly invested in deep-processed products to increase the value of the product,” said Mr. Nguyen Nam Hai.
Acknowledging this result, according to Mr. Phung Duc Tien – Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Vietnam’s coffee industry has grown tremendously in terms of area, productivity, output, gradually building the industry. Modern coffee processing industry, diversified products, suitable for market tastes.
Many advances have been applied to production such as: new varieties, intensive farming techniques, economical watering, intercropping, landscape design, preliminary processing, preservation, certified production and especially re-cultivation of tomatoes. Coffee has contributed to improving and enhancing the quality of coffee products. Vietnam has also initially formed a processing industry for export green coffee, roasted coffee, instant coffee and a storage system of 2.36 million tons/year.
“By the end of 2021, the country’s coffee area will reach 710,000 hectares, yield 2.7 tons/ha, three times higher than the world’s average yield. Export output in crop year 2021-2022 is over 1.7 million tons, export turnover is expected to reach 3.9 billion USD, making an important contribution to the growth of the agricultural industry over the past time. This is the coffee crop year with the highest turnover value ever“, Mr. Phung Duc Tien shared.
Coffee exports still face many pressures
According to Mr. Le Hoang Tai, Deputy Director of the Trade Promotion Department of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, besides the advantages, the coffee industry is facing many challenges due to the prolonged effects of the COVID-19 epidemic, the fluctuations of the world economic situation, the trade war leads to supply chain disruption, inflation increases, purchasing power decreases… leading to a situation where supply will be higher than demand.
In addition, coffee exports are also under great competitive pressure from other exporting countries such as Brazil, India, Colombia, etc. The world’s leading coffee import and consumption markets such as the United States, EU, … increasing requirements on quality and sustainability for products.
Most recently, on December 6, the European Commission (EC) said that the European Union (EU) had reached an agreement to ban the import of a number of products that are considered the main factors promoting deforestation, in This is obviously a huge challenge but also an opportunity for Vietnamese coffee exporters to change, adapt and develop”, Mr. Le Hoang Tai informed.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association said that, at present, Brazil has a very large coffee growing area, causing great competition pressure for Vietnamese coffee. Therefore, Vietnamese coffee needs to quickly find a place for itself, that is, it needs to quickly invest in depth. Along with that is planting high-yielding varieties and building a sustainable commodity market. At the same time, it is also necessary to create different coffee products.
“In order to increase the value of coffee for producers and ensure a stable life of coffee growers, it is necessary to promote sustainable coffee programs, quality coffee with international certifications such as 4C, Rain Forest, Fairtrade… with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, international organizations, the world’s leading roasters … “, the Chairman of the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association proposed.
In order to continue promoting the sustainable development of the coffee industry, Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien said that in the coming time, it is necessary to pay attention to implementing a number of solutions such as reviewing the scale of effective and sustainable coffee development; to research and create high-yield, high-quality coffee varieties that are resistant to pests and diseases; implement a technical package of intensive coffee cultivation with high quality and sustainable specialties.
“Besides improving the deep processing capacity, it is also necessary to promote calling for investment in the deep processing industry. Support coffee export deep processing enterprises to train human resources. Building and perfecting the market information system for deep-processed coffee. Consolidate the traditional markets for coffee exports from the EU, the United States, Japan and South Korea, and develop potential markets for ASEAN and China,” said Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien.
