tieu-den-dai-dien1According to the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA), Spain’s return of Vietnamese pepper products is real but in very small quantities.

The Spanish authorities have detected the content of the fungicide carbendazim exceeding the allowable limit in a shipment of black pepper from a Vietnamese enterprise to Spain recently. On the afternoon of February 17, the Vietnam Pepper Association had a response on this issue.

According to the Vietnam Pepper Association, the return of products is real but in very small quantities. However, the worry here is that other competitors of Vietnam take advantage of this situation to affect the reputation of Vietnam’s pepper industry.

Mr. Do Ha Nam – Chairman of the Vietnam Pepper Association said: “Other countries will take advantage to boycott Vietnamese products and this is the most dangerous thing. Because an incident we can prevent in a particular case, when supply exceeds demand, people will consider it a technical barrier and will be detrimental to the Vietnamese pepper industry.”

According to Mr. Nam, the fact that pepper is contaminated with fungicides or pesticide residues is partly due to the massive increase in pepper acreage in recent years, making it difficult for us to control the use of pesticides by growers. Partly because we do not have control of pepper at home before exporting, we have to return it when it is inspected.

Mr. Do Ha Nam also said: “We must strengthen by establishing and investing in domestic goods inspection units, enterprises must also build large key areas to control these products. so that the origin control according to the quality has been agreed between the buyer and the seller. Only then can we prevent and ensure the credibility between buyers and sellers.”

Europe, including Spain, currently imports a large amount of Vietnamese goods over 40,000 tons, which is a very difficult market and will become even more stringent when Vietnamese rivals such as Indonesia and India increase their pepper growing area, causing for more stringent controls. In 2015, Vietnam continued to dominate the world pepper market with over 50% of output and value of over 2.4 billion USD.
