Vietnam has many strengths
Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen – general secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association – said that Vietnamese durian has the advantage of abundant output, can be harvested all year round, especially off-season durian does not compete with Thai durian. .
In addition, an advantage of durian when exported to China is faster shipping time so the price is competitive.
These are the factors that help Vietnamese durian make great strides in the Chinese market after less than 2 years of entering this market of 1.4 billion people.
By the end of 2023, Vietnam’s durian area will be about 110,000 hectares, with an output of about 900,000 tons (more than twice the area and output compared to 2018).
Mr. Nguyen Quang Hieu – Head of the Department of International Cooperation and Communications (Department of Plant Protection, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) – said that up to now, the General Department of Customs of China has approved codes for Vietnam. 708 durian growing areas and 168 durian packing facilities.
In 2023, Vietnam will export more than 595,000 tons of durian to the Chinese market with a value of more than 2.1 billion USD.
According to Mr. Hieu, Vietnamese durian has also affirmed product quality. Although it has only been exported since September 2022, it has already occupied 32% of the market share in the Chinese market and is second only to Thailand (accounting for 68%).
Currently, the Plant Protection Department is completing documents to prepare to sign a protocol to export frozen durian to the Chinese market. Successful opening will be an important step forward for the Vietnamese durian industry.
“If we make good use of opportunities and advantages and organize professional production, while constantly improving techniques and improving quality, Vietnam’s durian industry will not need to worry about its position or market share. which can surpass Thai durian and dominate the Chinese market” – said a representative of the Plant Protection Department.
