According to statistics, up to this point, the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) has issued 876 durian growing area codes and packing facility codes eligible for export to China. Of these, 708 are durian growing area codes, the rest are packing facility codes.

Vietnamese durian has the advantage of abundant output, harvested year-round, especially when durian season in the Central Highlands does not compete with Thai durian.

2023 is a bumper export year for the fruit and vegetable industry. The total export value of this product group according to the General Department of Customs reached 5.6 billion USD, an increase of 66.7% (equivalent to an increase of 2.24 billion USD) compared to the previous year.

The export result of 5.6 billion USD was due to the sudden increase in the contribution of durian (HS code 0810.60.00). In 2023, durian fruit exports will reach 2.1 billion USD, up to 1.82 billion USD compared to 288 million USD the previous year. Of which, Vietnam’s durian is mainly exported to China with 2.03 billion USD, accounting for 99.4% of the country’s total export value of this product group.

Continuing the momentum of 2023, fruit and vegetable exports in the first 2 months of this year continue to grow strongly by more than 70%, reaching a value of 970 million USD with key products such as fresh coconut, dragon fruit, grapefruit, bananas, lemons. vine, mango, durian, in which durian is still the dominant product.

Along with increasingly meeting standards from demanding markets such as the US, Europe, Japan…, Vietnamese fruits and vegetables are having many opportunities to accelerate exports. Currently, Vietnam and China are completing procedures to open the market for frozen coconuts, durians…. When more of these products are officially exported, it will help exports reach 6.5 billion VND. USD in 2024.

According to the Plant Protection Department, at the beginning of 2023, the durian area in the Southern provinces is 47,208 hectares, by the beginning of 2024 it will be 62,173 hectares, an increase of nearly 15,000 hectares. The South Central Coast and Central Highlands provinces currently have 57,101 hectares of durian, an increase of more than 19,200 hectares in just one year.

Meanwhile, China’s durian market capacity can reach 20 billion USD and the world’s 28.6 billion USD by 2025. This is considered a great opportunity for Vietnamese durian if developed according to sustainable direction in the future.
