Commitment to bring net emissions to 0%

Vietnam is an agricultural country. However, at present, agriculture is not only an industry strongly affected by climate change but also a huge source of greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for 13.9% of the country’s total greenhouse gas emissions. Emissions are concentrated in the fields of wet rice cultivation, animal husbandry, land management, fertilizer use, soil emission management, etc. Agricultural emissions include CO2, methane (CH4) and N2O.

According to statistics, each year, agricultural production in Vietnam emits about 80 million tons of CO2 equivalent emissions, accounting for over 30% of the total national greenhouse gas. Of which, nearly 70% of greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture come from farming activities, 46% are from wet rice cultivation. Faced with such reality, Vietnam’s commitments at COP26 to bring net emissions to “zero” by 2050, reduce global methane emissions by 30% by 2030 compared to 2020…

Immediately after COP26, the Party and State of Vietnam identified climate change response as one of the difficult but central and urgent tasks. With a global, all-people approach and quick action, Vietnam is continuing to work hard to soon complete the relevant legal framework… to fulfill these commitments. Despite many challenges, this is also an opportunity for Vietnam to take advantage of the shift of global financial resources, cooperate on low-emission growth, promote circular economy development, and adapt to change. climate.

Therefore, in the coming time, Vietnam has oriented sustainable agricultural development in the near future such as transforming the food system towards “green”, low emission and sustainability, investment in development developing agricultural infrastructure, promoting the participation of the private sector in investment, development and application of advances in agricultural production, and replicating the public-private partnership model, promoting the application of digital technology in agricultural production. agricultural value chain.

As a business-oriented organization promoting an active role in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Strategy in Vietnam, facilitating the sharing of experiences and good practices, enhancing coordination close and dialogue between the business community, the Government and the media to promote sustainable development,

Ms. Nguyen Quynh Nga – Deputy Director of the Enterprise Office for Sustainable Development, VCCI, shared that the media – press is an effective arm to promote the implementation of sustainable agriculture and weekly economy. combating climate change in order to realize sustainable development goals… Through this Program, VBCSD VCCI hopes to provide useful information in support of information dissemination on green agriculture and Sustainable development, about typical modern and sustainable initiatives and business models in the country and in the world, replicating these models in the business community and society and Vietnam will catch up on the development roadmap net zero emissions by 2050.

Towards regenerative agriculture

At the conference, Mr. Khuat Quang Hung – External Affairs Director of Nestlé VN Group shared, implementing the national strategies of the State, at the end of 2019, Nestlé Group announced the Commitment of Net Emissions of “0”. ” – Net Zero in 2050 with a specific roadmap to achieve this goal. The Company’s Net Zero Roadmap shows that nearly two-thirds of greenhouse gas emissions come from agriculture. So addressing these emissions is one of Nestlé VN’s main focus areas.

Most importantly, Nestlé VN introduces the concept of regenerative agriculture – an initiative with great potential to help tackle climate change, support communities and protect natural resources. In Vietnam, the company’s regenerative agriculture. integrated and implemented within the framework of the NESCAFÉ Plan.

Regenerative agriculture aims to conserve and restore farmland, ecosystems and its vital resources including soil, biodiversity and water, benefiting farmers, the environment and society association in general. These benefits include capturing soil carbon and plant biomass, improving soil health and fertility, reducing agrochemical use, and reducing net greenhouse gas emissions.

Vietnam is moving towards a sustainable regenerative agriculture in Vietnam

Therefore, regenerative agriculture also aims to reduce farmers’ dependence on agricultural inputs, improve the resilience of farmland to climate change, and benefit farmers. farmers’ livelihoods.

Nestlé VN’s comprehensive regenerative agriculture model clearly identifies the three main resources of any agricultural system. It’s land, water and biodiversity. This is at the heart of comprehensive restoration efforts. Priority actions are to use more diverse production systems that integrate livestock and practice based on the facts, supported by science-based agronomic principles. Incorporating livestock provides the opportunity to improve nutrient cycling and optimize returns on soil and biomass, while minimizing environmental impact.

The most important in this model is that farmers must be the center of the model. Partnering with farmers and other stakeholders is key to a fair transition.

To implement the Strategy for Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development, and the international commitments mentioned above, Vietnam needs great efforts, not only from the Government, but also from the private sector. Individuals include businesses, direct producers who participate in implementation at different scales to develop a green, low-carbon and sustainable agriculture.

As the co-host of VBCSD and co-chair of the Sustainable Agriculture Partnership Vietnam (PSAV), Nestlé Vietnam aspires to be a pioneer in sustainable development activities, especially in the field of sustainable agriculture. regenerative agriculture sector, contributing to the implementation of the national emission reduction targets…
