World black and white pepper prices tend to increase in some producing countries due to increased demand in the winter. However, pepper price is forecast to hardly increase sharply due to oversupply pressure.

The World Pepper Association estimates that global pepper production in 2019 will reach 592,000 tons, while demand is about 450,000 tons, so the price of pepper will continue to be low in the near future.

The price of robusta coffee delivered in January 2020 decreased by 0.3% to 1,377 USD / ton. Price of arabica coffee delivered in March 2020 went sideways at 117 UScent / pound.

Affected by extreme weather such as drought and floods in the major producing state of Karnataka, the Indian coffee crop in 2019-2020 may be reduced by one-third compared to last year.

Heavy and continuous rain from August to October in Chikmagalur, Kodagu and Hassan plantations caused landslides, floods and swept away coffee plantations, destroyed infrastructure and caused coffee beans immature.

According to preliminary estimates, coffee production is expected to decrease by at least 30-35%, said MB Ganapathy, Chairman of the Karnataka State Crop Association (KPA).

The state of Karnataka accounts for 70% of India's coffee production.

In 2018-2019, coffee production is at 319,000 tons, including 95,000 tons of arabica coffee and 224,000 tons of robusta coffee, according to KPA.

Ganapathy said arabica coffee production could be further narrowed, to about 70,000 tons this year. In addition to heavy rains, an outbreak of white-body borer (WSB) in the beginning of the year attacked the plantations, damaging yields.
