Indian coffee farmers, who have been burdened with lower yields this year, are facing another problem with sharply declining pepper output.

Pepper is often intercropped with coffee and areca in the states of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu in India.

While coffee production is estimated to fall by 15-20% this year, pepper output is expected to decline by more than 30%, according to Deccan Herald.

In 2018-2019, India harvests 64,000 tons of pepper and is estimated to decrease to about 45,000 tons in 2019-20.

In 2017-2018, pepper production reached 70,878 tons due to the districts of Kerala state and 5 districts of Karnataka affected by heavy rain, floods and landslides, causing damage to plantations resulting in low yields.

Robusta coffee prices delivered in January 1/2020 increased 0.7% to 1,377 USD / ton. The price of arabica coffee delivered in March 2020 increased by 0.5% to 117 UScent / pound.

On November 19, the price of Robusta coffee delivered in January 2020 period and March 2020 period decreased 0.9% compared to November 9, to 1,372 USD / ton and 1,394 USD / ton, but increased. 9.7% and 9.4% respectively compared to October 19.

Price of coffee delivered in period 05/2020 traded at 1,412 USD / ton, down 1.0% compared to 9/11, but up 8.8% compared to October 19.

On the New York Stock Exchange, on November 19, the price of Arabica coffee delivered in December 2019 decreased by 3.6% compared to November 9, to 105.55 Uscent / lb, but increased by 10.3%. compared to October 19.

The price of coffee delivered in March 2020 was 109.2 Uscent / lb, down 3.2% compared to November 9, but up 10.2% compared to October 19.

According to the International Coffee Organization (ICO), compared with the average annual rate of 2.1% over the previous 10 years, global consumption growth in the 2018/19 and 2019/20 seasons is estimated to slow down. .

World coffee consumption in the 2018/19 crop increased by 1.7% to 165.35 million bags and in the 2019/20 crop is expected to increase by 1.5% to 167.9 million bags.
