Turkey prefers Vietnamese pepper to Indian and Indonesian pepper

That is the information shared during the Export Advisory Session to the Turkish market held by the Trade Promotion Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) on the afternoon of March 30.

During the above consultation session, Mr. Tevfik Donmez, a businessman from Turkey who has imported products from Vietnam for 20 years, said that the demand for Vietnamese spice products is in Turkey. The period is increasing in recent years, especially for pepper.

Turkish consumers rate Vietnamese black pepper better than similar products of India and Indonesia in terms of spiciness, taste, etc. Therefore, Turkish businesses are buying more pepper from Vietnam.

Information from the General Department of Customs shows that, in 2021, nearly 4,000 tons of Vietnamese pepper have been exported to Turkey, worth more than 12 million USD.

According to the Trade Promotion Agency, Turkey is a market with a large economic scale, vibrant foreign trade activities and high consumer demand with a population of nearly 84 million people. Turkey’s economy ranks 6th in Europe, 16th in the world and belongs to the group of 20 largest economies in the world.

Turkey has a strategic position on the trade route between the three continents of Asia – Europe – Africa. Turkey is considered as a potential market, an important gateway to the Middle East region, a transshipment point into the EU market for many Vietnamese exports such as rice, milk and dairy products, nuts and seeds. pepper, furniture, rubber, tea, yarn, fabric, garments, shoes, electronic goods, handicrafts, spare parts…

Turkey is currently Vietnam’s second largest export market in West Asia, just behind the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The bilateral trade balance between Vietnam and Turkey in recent years is often surplus to Vietnam.

However, the proportion of Vietnam’s exports in Turkey’s total imports is still low (only about 0.5%). Many of Vietnam’s products exported to Turkey account for a small proportion, lower than those of direct competitors, except for pepper, cashew nut, fiber, fiber, and rubber.
