Rice prices today July 31: Summer-autumn rice prices fall, farmers have difficulty consuming
According to a survey by An Giang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the price of rice today (July 31) remains low. Accordingly, the price of sticky rice (fresh) at 4,000 – 4,200 VND/kg; price of fresh Long An sticky rice at 4,700 – 4,850 VND/kg.
IR50404 rice price in An Giang recorded at 4,800 – 5,200 VND/kg; Dai Thom 8 rice reached 6,000 – 6,200 VND/kg.
According to many farmers, the price of summer-autumn rice in many places decreased partly because traders and boats could not come to buy rice.
Mr. Chau Tien Tho, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of An Giang province, said that the province has harvested 40% of the summer-autumn rice area with the expected output of this crop reaching 800,000 tons. The rapid response team of the province promptly resolved the problem, making the circulation and transportation quite stable.
“However, the current difficulty of the locality is that rice consumption is difficult because traders cannot come to buy and harvest, the harvest stage is also entangled because many places farmers cannot go to the fields, so there is a serious shortage of labor. If not handled in time, it may disrupt the autumn-winter crop and affect the supply of rice,” Tho said.
This is also the concern of the representative of Soc Trang province’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. In Soc Trang, many fruits and summer-autumn rice are at the peak of harvest, but now it is difficult for boats and traders to go to Soc Trang to buy rice for people.
“It is suggested that the provinces in the region, when having the introduction letter of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, create favorable conditions for rice-collecting boats to pass through the provinces” – the representative of Soc Trang province’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development suggested.
Why did the price of Vietnamese rice export fall?
According to a report of the Department of Agricultural Product Processing and Market Development (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), the volume of rice exported in June 2021 is estimated at 400,000 tons with a value of 226 million USD, bringing the total volume of rice exported in the first 6 months. 2021 will reach nearly 3 million tons with a value of 1.64 billion USD, down 14.8% in volume and 4.7% in value over the same period in 2020.
The average export price of rice in the first 5 months of 2021 reached 543 USD/ton, up 11.9% over the same period in 2020.
Philippines is Vietnam’s largest rice consumption market in the first 5 months of 2021 with 35.6% market share.
Rice exports to this market in the first 5 months of 2021 reached 944,000 tons and 502 million USD, down 27.5% in volume and 16.1% in value over the same period in 2020.
Regarding export categories, in the first 5 months of 2021, the export value of white rice accounted for 39.90% of the total turnover; jasmine rice and fragrant rice accounted for 39.88%; sticky rice accounted for 17.47%; japonica rice and Japanese rice varieties accounted for 2.66%, while other types of rice accounted for 0.08%.
For sticky rice, the major export markets are China (accounting for 81.25%), the Philippines (accounting for 6.14%) and Malaysia (accounting for 5.47%).
Currently, the price of Vietnam’s export rice (5% broken) is only offered for sale at 400-404 USD/ton, while in mid-May 2021, it is offered for sale at 513-517 USD/ton. ie has decreased by over 110 USD/ton.
Some rice exporters in the Mekong Delta said that the export price of Vietnamese rice was adjusted down in order to increase competitiveness against competitors.
Because currently, the price of Indian rice exports is offered at 383-387 USD/ton, Thai rice price 390-394 USD/ton.
With the current new price, it is expected that Vietnam’s exports will recover. Besides, According to FAO report, Bangladesh may import up to 1.8 million tons of rice in 2021, the highest level in 4 years.
Bangladesh is now emerging as a major rice importer after successive floods last year destroyed crops and pushed rice prices to record highs.
This may be an opportunity for Vietnam to promote to this market.
