The Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) cited statistics of the General Department of Customs, saying that export of wood and wood products in March 2020 reached US $ 985.6 million, up 12.5% over the same period. in 2019. Of which, wood products export reached 664.8 million USD, up 7.6% over the same period in 2019.
Accumulated from the beginning of the year to the end of March 2020, the export of wood and wood products reached 2.5 billion USD, up 13.9% as compared to the same period in 2019 (lower than the increase of 15.8% in 3 first month of 2019). Export of wooden products reached US $ 1.8 billion, up 12.4% over the same period in 2019 (lower than the increase of 17.6% in the first 3 months of 2019).
In the first 3 months of 2020, compared with many export items, wooden products and wooden products still achieved good growth. During this period, the Covid-19 epidemic only had a strong impact on the Chinese market, the execution of orders to the US and Europe remained normal. However, since the second half of March 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic broke out and spread to the United States and European countries, in order to cope with the epidemic situation, these countries have issued many strong measures such as the closure of shops selling non-essential goods and personnel at ports were also narrowed due to the movement ban, causing operations at ports to stop.
In fact, in March 2020, although exporting wood and wood products to the US market increased by 21.8% to US $ 1.29 billion, the pace was lower than the 34.7% increase. in March 2019. Thus, the delay of orders from US partners has a direct impact on Vietnam's export of timber and wood products to this market.
Exports of wood and wood products to major markets in the EU fell sharply in March 2020 such as Germany, France and the Netherlands. Export to Germany market reached 13.5 million USD, down 13.4%; France reached 9.7 million USD, down 19.8%; The Netherlands reached US $ 6.7 million, down 24.7% compared to March 2019.
According to the Export-Import Department, the US and EU are two major export markets for Vietnam's timber and wood products, in the context that these two markets are becoming the epidemic hubs that will negatively impact many exporting enterprises. Vietnam's export of timber and wood products has led to many businesses having to produce in moderation and even to stop production because they have not signed new orders.
Notably, exports of wood and wood products achieved high growth rates in March and the first 3 months of 2020. Taking advantage of opportunities from the Chinese market when other markets are not stable is a good plan for timber enterprises in Vietnam, in the context of declining exports to traditional markets.
