The risk of falling into debt because of mass destruction

There is still more than a month until the pepper harvest (mid-March) in the pepper capital Chu Se, Chu Puh, I thought that when I came here, I would see a picture of the family excitedly receiving the news that this year could be spent. price (current price is 120,000 VND/kg).

But that’s not the case, most people are sad, some people even exclaim that: If you are sick, you are sick, if you die, you also want to die.

From about mid-July 2011 up to now, many farmers in the two largest pepper granaries in Gia Lai province, Chu Se and Chu Puh, have always had to live in a state of loss of food and sleep because of mass death. Small households will lose a few dozen pillars, many households will have thousands of pillars.
“Human life and tree are tied together”

This saying was said by farmer Nguyen Duc Thang (35 years old, living in Plei Tho Ga village, Chu Don commune, Chu Puh district) when he took us to the field of his house’s 600-pillar pepper garden. He explained, all activities of the family with four mouths depend on pepper trees. I just bought land and built a house near the highway thanks to the pepper tree, but looking at this “disastrous” situation, I might have to go back to the farm house…

The pepper gardens were completely dead.

Pointing to the dead poles and those showing signs of disease, Mr. Thang lamented: With nearly 10 years of experience in growing this agricultural product, I can feel how many inches higher each day each pepper vine grows. , how many more leaves, but never seen the pepper die as much and as quickly as the past time. My garden is completely damaged by more than 20% of the towers. That is not to mention the number of cylinders to detect the disease in time, have tried to pump drugs according to the instructions of the Plant Protection Station; However, currently, they are also in a state of yellowing leaves.

Mr. Thang added, since the disease was discovered, the family has “poured” into the garden to spend tens of millions of dong on medicine, but they still die. What’s more worrisome is that this disease spreads very quickly. Looking at the newly planted pepper pillars of Mr. Thang’s family, the leaves are showing signs of shrinking, and the pillars that are said to have been lucky to have escaped the disease have very few fruits, some clusters have no seeds.

According to Mr. Thang, if pepper is not sick, with the current price, his family will collect over 200 million dong. The damage caused by not harvesting for a few years, plus the investment cost of planting a new plant, it takes several million dong a pillar, but replanting is not sure to get rid of the disease, then the investment money is borrowed from the bank… will be a burden on the family. family.

In Plei Tho Ga village in particular and Chu Don commune in general, almost every house was destroyed by disease, many houses suffered from 80% to 100% damage. Mr. Hieu’s house had 3,000 pillars that were completely killed. Mr. Ha’s house has 2,000 pillars destroyed, he abandoned the garden because he couldn’t find money to reinvest. The most damaged was Mrs. Nguyen Thi Tuyet’s household, who had nearly 5,000 pepper roots but died of more than 3,000 heads of disease. “The death rate of pepper only lasted for 1 week. If in the future there are no measures to overcome the above situation, we will also go bankrupt!” – Ms. Tuyet was depressed.

Dead pepper not only makes farmers face many difficulties, but how much capital and effort of the people are poured into rivers, into the sea, into a state of debt due to bank loans, purchase of fertilizers and drugs on credit. Plant protection…
Farmers are in danger of bankruptcy even though they can spend their prices

According to many farmers, this is not the first year the disease appeared, but the type of mass death was only seen after last year’s rainy season. People see the disease, they keep bowing to all four directions, but they do not know the disease and specific treatment methods, so the treatment effect is not high. As a result, hundreds of billions of dong of people are leaving every day wearing hats.

According to Mr. Le Dinh Quoc (Pleiku City) – who has more than 20 years of growing pepper trees, one of the pioneers of Chu Se pepper barn, pepper is very fastidious, so disease and death are mostly caused by people. improper cultivation techniques, too much chemical fertilizers and pesticides. For many years, maintaining it like that has exhausted the pepper tree; When the fungus is incubated for a long time, the plant is not resistant to the disease, leading to rapid death and death on a large scale.

Due to the large profits of pepper trees, many people have flocked to grow pepper even though they have not fully grasped the knowledge and techniques about this difficult plant. In addition, eating pepper plants are chemical fertilizers and pesticides sold widely throughout these two pepper granaries, which also contributes to the deterioration of pepper plants, making them susceptible to diseases.

Talking to us, Mr. Hoang Phuoc Binh – Standing Vice Chairman, General Secretary of Chu Se Pepper Association said: The cause of mass death of pepper plants is phytophthora fungus. Pepper is a plant that requires a lot of capital, but not everyone who grows pepper starts with a lot of capital. The story of farmers reporting that pepper plants died quickly, died slowly, yellowing leaves, rotten roots, broken stems… made us stand still. Having said that, in difficult times like these, people only rely on the Association.

The association has coordinated with specialized agencies to directly visit each diseased orchard, however, it also admits that many times it is powerless. If the pepper garden is lucky enough to detect the disease early, it can still be saved, but when the disease is severe, the treatment costs are very high, the treatment situation is also precarious.

The direct cause of mass death, according to Mr. Binh, was that the storm No. 9, No. 11 in 2009 spilled and shook the roots, creating conditions for the fungus to penetrate and then incubate, when it rains heavily. 2011 rainy season) will moisten the soil. This is a favorable environment for fungal diseases to grow and destroy pepper gardens.

The association has recommended that pepper garden owners take preventive measures by digging drainage ditches and treating disease with chemical drugs available on the market such as Aliette, alfamil, alpine… or using trichoderm preparations- Type the essence mixed with water to spray and water according to the instructions on the package.
