This 2019 pepper season, pepper growers added a new worry, when the pepper plant suddenly “caught” with a new disease, a series of cotton shedding, a little fruit. The risk of revenue loss due to reduced productivity.

Mr. Tran Van Luong's pepper garden in Tan Thanh commune has been eradicated.

But at the end of the rainy season in 2018, the whole pepper garden of his family naturally turned yellow and more than 1 week after losing all the leaves and dying in a series. Although his family tried every means to save pepper garden but it was hopeless. All the money that his family saved many years ago invested in the garden was completely lost, losing several billion dong.

“My family planted pepper for many years, the experience has, but before the mass death, I did not know the reason why, so I gave up and looked at the death target,” Luong said, sighing.

Currently the entire pepper garden is almost wiped out. To have money to cover, his family tries to take care of the acacia garden (live pepper posts) to get food for the goats.

“I want to leave pepper, switch to another crop, but now, even the bank debt is not known how to pay, which is done now,” Mr. Luong than.

Similarly, Nguyen Thi Tuyet Ly's family in hamlet 3, Thien Hung commune was also damaged with nearly one thousand posts being harvested.

Ms. Ly said, at first discovered a few dead posts scattered, then spread quickly into pieces larger than a dozen pillars that the family could not back up.

In addition to the number of dead pepper posts, the target venues were quarantined but not infected but also meager and lifeless. At present, the whole pepper garden of the family has been wiped out, instead of a cow pasture.

Not only facing the death of pepper, this year, Binh Phuoc pepper this year also unexpectedly “stick” more new disease, no less serious disease quickly die slowly. It is the condition of cotton shedding when preparing to bear fruit without clear cause. The prospect of losing its price and losing its crop is showing in the immediate future.

Dang Van Lap's family, in Tan Hung hamlet, Phuoc Thien commune has 1,000 posts, in 2018 his family collected 4 tons. In 2019, his family invests about VND 50 million in assorted fertilizers.

Pepper garden of Mr. Dang Van Lap's family suddenly shed flowers, now only the whole green of leaves.

Despite the price depreciation, but his family is happy because the pepper garden has developed very well, beautiful flowers, expected to earn a decent amount of money to continue re-investing and sticking with pepper. Not happy for a long time, he was “dumbfounded” when he saw the pilot fall full of roots, the posts are now all green.

“The pepper garden is well cared for by my family, applying the standard care process. Yet do not understand the reason for where, when waking up, one saw that the pillars of pepper, flowers have not fallen more than half a year ago. It's gone white, guys “, said Lap as if he was crying.

Also in Tan Hung hamlet, Phuoc Thien commune, Mr. Bui Van Ngoi, a senior farmer with pepper cultivation more than 20 years, is also facing root decay. Mr. Ngoi discovered that the garden of 400 pillars of the family is lush, the fruit is blooming, suddenly falling white. He rushed to find out, research enough cures, but no solution.

“Making pepper for 2 decades, this seems to be the first time I see such a situation of mass cotton loss. The cause may be due to climate change, this year the rain is late, the weather is hot, dry, low humidity, making pepper unbearable. Now there must be scientists to research and conclude, then there is a cure for pepper gardens, ”Ngoi said.

Mr. Bui Van Ngoi in Phuoc Thien commune has more than 20 years of experience in pepper cultivation, and he cannot save the pepper garden.

According to the statistics of Binh Phuoc Department of Planting and Plant Protection, from the beginning of the year until now, the whole province has more than 574ha of pepper died of disease.

Of which, 132 hectares were lost, concentrated in 2 districts of Bu Gia Map (107ha) and Bu Dop district (25ha). Most of the rest died on average and mildly, however, the damage was also great. Pepper productivity also decreased significantly, and the following season decreased more than the previous crop.

The 2017-2018 crop is only 1.4 tons / ha, and is down by more than 40% compared to the 2016-2017 crop. The 2018-2019 crop is expected to continue to decline, reaching only about 1.2 tons / ha.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Bac, Director of Bu Dop District Agricultural Service Center, there are many causes of pepper death. The main reason is due to climate change, erratic weather.

Besides, the time of high pepper prices, people massively switched to planting pepper without knowing whether the land is suitable for pepper cultivation or not. Then do not check and control the seed well when buying, there are some varieties that do not guarantee long-term development, only develop at a certain time.

After planting, many caregivers are not technically correct, not suitable for the development and growth of pepper plants, use some fertilizers and pesticides not suitable for pepper development …

“The provincial Department of Science and Technology has invited scientists to survey, research and find out the cause of dead pepper, from which there is a solution to help people cope with pepper pests. However, it has not been found yet. Due to the exact cause of death, there is no effective solution.

In the immediate future, to limit the damage, pepper farmers must save their own pepper gardens with experience, along with the recommendations of the authorities, not planting new trees, and not replanting on dead pepper land, or replace with another crop. “
