Pepper prices in recent days have dropped to only 39,000 – 40,000 VND / kg, causing many farmers in Dong Nai to wait for ripe pepper to fall because there is not enough cost to collect.
3 years ago, Ms. Tran Thi Loan in Xuan Tho commune (Xuan Loc district, Dong Nai) planted 3.5 hectares of pepper, gaining more than 7 tons. With the “golden” pepper price of about 200,000 VND / kg, her family earned more than 600 million VND.
However, in the past 2 years, pepper prices have started to decline and continuously plummeting without interrupting, Mrs. Loan's family has also gradually reduced the pepper growing area to 2.5 hectares. Estimated this year, she earned about 2 tons of pepper but the price was only 40,000 VND / kg.
The price of pepper decreased, and many farmers had to spend ripe because they could not afford the cost of calling and picking
While a current harvest is 250,000 VND / day, on average each harvest is about 5-6 kg / day. Growing pepper for 20 years, but Mrs. Tran Thi Loan said she had never seen pepper prices as low as this year.
“Because of the low price, there is not enough cost to cover the pickers; My family and many other farmers in the area have to wait for the pepper to ripen. At that time, I just called for a harvest, it is good to collect as much, ”Loan said.
Mr. Pham Dinh Nam – Chairman of People's Committee of Xuan Tho commune said that with the selling price of 60,000 VND / kg, farmers could make a profit. This year, pepper prices are low, coupled with unfavorable weather, many pepper growers are facing difficulties because of falling prices.
Xuan Tho commune is the largest pepper growing area of Xuan Loc district. In the past 2 years, the price of pepper is decreasing proportional to the area of pepper growing in the commune, from more than 700 hectares to only about 600 hectares. Local authorities are working hard to make pepper stand in this area.
Loan said she has never seen pepper prices as low as this year
Mr. Nam said, local authorities are orienting people to reduce the area of pepper cultivation. “The remaining area focuses on farming towards clean production, reducing investment costs and creating favorable conditions for people to join the commune's pepper link chain for a specific off-take contract,” Mr. Nam said. will.
Mr. Nguyen Van Lam, representative of Nedspice Spices Processing Company (with a large pepper plant project in Dong Nai), said that from the beginning of the year, the output of many agricultural products such as pepper, cashew, coffee … exports increased significantly. However, the value decreases because the supply in the world market is large, many businesses that want to increase sales volume are forced to reduce prices.
Mr. Lam assessed that, at the end of this year and early next year, pepper, cashew and coffee products will enter the new crop, putting even more pressure on the consumption market. While exporting agricultural products to China is increasingly difficult, other markets have also saturated because of previous increase in imports.
2019 will continue to be difficult with the pepper industry in the country
According to Dong Nai Statistical Office, 9-month export turnover of 2019 increased low, only over 6.2% over the same period last year. The reason is that the prices of some agricultural products have dropped sharply, including pepper. The narrow export market of agricultural products also makes the export turnover in the province increase low.
At present, pepper price in Dong Nai is only about VND 39,000 – 40,000 / kg, down about VND 20,000 / kg over the same period last year. The average export price of pepper in September was estimated at 2,409 USD / ton; 10% off for August 2019; down 19% over the same period.
The Import and Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) stated that 2019 will continue to be difficult with the domestic pepper industry. While pepper prices are still very low, production costs tend to increase, at least 10% compared to 2017. |
