According to significant pepper traders in the southern provinces, the price of black pepper in the domestic market in the first few days of the week inched up to 1,000 VND/kg but then returned to standing at the level of 10 days ago and continue to suffer “dude” by the price of imported pepper.
However, the pressure of imported pepper prices usually does not last too long, only about 2 weeks because the volume of goods delivered to the ship from both Vietnamese pepper exporters and FDI exporters remains high. . While in recent years the volume of pepper imported from other producing countries, both member countries and non-members of the IPC, fluctuates between 20,000 – 30,000 tons per year.
According to observers of the world pepper market, this volume of imported pepper is equivalent to the volume of non-quota exports to China, including the number not reported by the Customs sector of our country and the amount for demand. local consumption. Therefore, the estimated total output of our country’s farmers harvested in the last season fluctuated around 200,000 tons of bucket pepper, which is not a number that puts too much pressure on exporters.
Preliminary data of the Customs industry shows that in the first 4 months of 2018, our country exported a total of 86,849 tons of pepper of all kinds, with a turnover of 307.14 million USD. Obviously, there is no pressure on quantity right now, while price is still ahead.
According to market data of the International Pepper Community (IPC), pepper prices last week in some markets such as Kochi – India, Sarawak – Malaysia decreased slightly while pepper prices in Vietnam decreased significantly, to about 7 %. In contrast, in Indonesia and Sri Lanka prices were relatively stable. However, in USD exchange rate, prices in Indonesia decreased while in Sri Lanka increased slightly.
According to traders in Karnataka, the price of pepper bucket offered to buy at the farm gate is currently ranging between Rs 34,500 – 35,000 / quintal (equivalent to 5,086 – 5,160 USD / ton), while the price of pepper has been preliminarily processed at the mills. processing in Kerala costs Rs 37,500/quintal (equivalent to USD 5,529/ton). However, there are some opinions that pepper prices at this level are mixed with imported pepper, and Indian pepper farmers do not want to sell at this level.
The export price of Brazilian black pepper for delivery at Victoria Port decreased to $3,000-3,050/ton for grade B – Asta and $2,950/ton for grade B1 (FOB). The price of Vietnamese black pepper 500 Gr/l offered at $2,700/ton and 550 Gr/l offered at $3,000/ton (FOB-HCM), down $200-250/ton from last week.
It is expected that the domestic price of pepper will remain low until the demand for white pepper processing increases again and especially the pressure of imported pepper eases in the next 2 weeks.
