In 2017 alone, ethnic minorities in Dak Lak, Dak Nong, Gia Lai and Lam Dong provinces have newly planted more than 16,207 hectares; In particular, Dak Lak is the locality with the largest new pepper growing area with over 5,500 hectares.

According to many farmers, although the price of pepper is low, the profit from pepper cultivation is still many times higher than some other perennial industrial crops such as coffee, cashew … so the people still convert one the number of areas under coffee and other inefficient crops to grow pepper.

Mr. Ly Van Suu's family, in the remote commune of Ea H’leo, Ea H’leo district (Dak Lak), have bravely transferred more than 2 hectares of coffee after the end of the business cycle and had low productivity to grow pepper. Although he has just harvested this crop (after 3 years), Mr. Ly Van Sau said that with the current price of pepper, plus the effort and investment in pepper is many times lower than coffee. He expects that developing pepper will bring higher economic efficiency than coffee.

Mr. Tan Hoang also lives in the remote commune of Ea Toh, Krong Nang district (Dak Lak), cut down more than 1 hectare of coffee and switched to growing pepper, with 1 ha of coffee crop, each harvest for less than 2 tons of coffee Coffee, with the current price (36,000 to 37,000 VND / kg), only collected over 72 to 74 million VND, after deducting expenses, the profit was not much. Meanwhile, 1 ha of pepper, after 4 years in business, with an average yield of 3 tons / ha, with the current price, after deducting expenses, the interest is nearly 100 million …

In fact, at present, many localities in the Central Highlands, households have shifted a series of areas of shallow crops to pepper but the local authorities still have no control over them. However, the development “hot” Pepper also leads to many consequences for localities in the Central Highlands, especially breaking the planning of crop structure, arranging pepper cultivation in many inappropriate areas, using many unknown pepper varieties. … so every year the Central Highlands provinces have thousands of hectares of pepper pests, diseases die fast, slow death causing great damage to farmers.

Currently, the Central Highlands provinces have a total drainage area of more than 85,249 ha; Of which, Dak Lak is the locality with the largest drainage area with over 42,563 ha, followed by Dak Nong province.
