Back to Nam Yang Cooperative (Dak Doa District, Gia Lai) in the early days of September, we were not surprised by the way that people here are rebuilding Le Chi pepper varieties, planted under organic methods. muscle towards a green and clean agriculture.

Remember 2 years ago, Nam Yang Cooperative was born in the period of “tragic” pepper, raging epidemics, dreadful price drops caused many people to be skeptical about the success of this model. However, with a new direction, applying scientific and technical advances, the pepper garden of the cooperative is still lush and brings high value.

Up to now, thanks to boldly doing organic pepper and safety standards, Nam Yang Cooperative has got high quality products to market with Tieu Le Chi brand which are highly appreciated by domestic and foreign customers. Typically, organic pepper (clean 600 substances) includes red pepper, skull pepper, black pepper, green pepper; Clean pepper (clean 30 substances) includes red pepper, black pepper, green pepper, green pepper, dried green pepper, yellow pepper, multi-colored pepper, pickled green pepper, sweet and sour green pepper … and pepper lines VietGAP.

Notably, the trio of red pepper, cranberry, and black pepper of Le Chi were recognized as typical rural agricultural products at the provincial level. In March 2019, the International Certification Organization Control Union granted USDA and EU organic certification for pepper products of the cooperative.

Farmer Le Trung Tin (Village 5, Nam Yang Commune) has 3 ha of pepper and takes care of traditional methods. More than 3 years ago, he brought pepper garden to join the cooperative and take care of organic methods. Last crop, in the context of simultaneous death of pepper, his garden still gained 6 tons / ha.

Mr. Tin said: “If regular consumption is only 40,000 VND / kg, my pepper sells for 90,000 VND / kg. If I didn't go to the cooperative, cultivate it organically, maybe my pepper garden would be gone. The most fun is recently, my pepper garden has been certified VietGAP standards.

To be successful, Mr. Nguyen Tan Cong – Chairman of the Board of Directors of Nam Yang Cooperative said: Right after the establishment, the farmers in the cooperative actively visited, learned the models of organic agricultural production, High-quality agricultural products in the provinces, participate in conferences and seminars, meet domestic and foreign experts on organic agriculture … Thereby, accumulating experience and knowledge to deploy into production of Cooperatives.

“On the other hand, we have bravely approached businesses that purchased high quality clean agricultural products, organic agricultural products of Nedspice, Son Ha Spices, Vietnamese Pepper … in search of stable output. with good prices ”- Mr. Cong said.

After a period of learning, until the 2017-2018 crop, Nam Yang Cooperative has a 1.5-hectare pepper garden certified by the Control Union International Certification Organization to meet the US and EU organic standards. The entire output of nearly 7 tons of pepper is covered by Viet Pepper Co., Ltd. at a price of 120,000 VND / kg, nearly 2 times higher than the market price.

With that initial success, the cooperative continued to expand the scale of organic pepper production. In the crop year 2018-2019, the cooperative had nearly 16 hectares of pepper reaching the US and EU organic standards, with an output of nearly 60 tons. In particular, 4.6 ha of Vietnam Pepper Co., Ltd. linked with the consumption price at the price of 85,000 VND / kg; 4.8 ha linked to underwriting with Son Ha Spices Company (the initial price is VND 82,000 / kg).

The price of pepper has significantly decreased compared to the previous crop, due to the impact from the market when the pepper price in general continued to decline sharply, but still nearly 2 times higher than the market price (currently only 43,000-44,000 VND / kg). With the remaining 6.5 ha of organic pepper, the cooperative is actively seeking partners for consumption.

Mr. Truong Phuoc Anh – Director of Gia Lai Department of Agriculture and Rural Development: “In the context of the Central Highlands pepper died of disease outbreaks on a large scale, making farmers suffer heavy losses, the model of growing clean pepper towards organic sustainability such as cooperatives Nam Yang is encouraging. Cooperative pepper products have been accepted by fastidious markets like the US and EU, with prices doubling the current market prices.
