On December 15 and 16, the Office of the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA) and its member businesses have just had a survey and preliminary assessment of the production situation of the 2016 pepper crop that is about to be harvested.
Through the survey of some typical households in the key pepper growing areas of Xuan Loc, Long Khanh, Cam My districts, Dong Nai province and Chau Duc and Xuyen Moc districts of Ba Ria – Vung Tau province, the survey results show that :
– This year, unlike the previous year, pepper ripens later, so the harvest will be later, autumn will be around after the Lunar New Year, ie around the end of February 2016.
– The output is higher than the 2015 crop but lower than the 2014 crop due to unfavorable weather, abundant flowering period (June-July 2015), the gardens have hot sun, lack of water … so even though farmers in the two provinces have Very experienced in taking care of pepper gardens, but the results of the gardens are all affected by the phenomenon of “pepper pepper”, which means that the pepper heads are very few fruits, only about 50-60% of the fruit per head, the length of the spike is only two thirds compared to 2014.
– The area of pepper has increased sharply since the beginning of 2015, newly planted gardens are developing well because farmers with technical knowledge should take good care of them, using mainly organic fertilizers (cow dung, pig manure, goat manure, fish manure) etc., aged for 2-3 years with the addition of probiotics and treatment of fungi with Trichoderma) so the pepper garden is mostly sturdy.
Pests and diseases: the disease died quickly without much manifestation because farmers knew how to localize the disease to avoid spreading and the rainy season made drainage ditches very well. However, nematodes are on a strong upward trend.
In general, the 2016 harvest season of Dong Nai and Ba Ria-Vung Tau provinces is about equal to the yield and yield of the harvested gardens as in 2015 (a year of crop failure) and 70%-80% of the 2014 crop. However, some new planting areas have begun to be harvested, so the overall output is estimated to be similar to the 2014 crop.
