On December 15 and 16, the Office of Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA) and its member enterprises have just made a preliminary survey on the situation of pepper production in 2016, which is about to be harvested.

Through surveys of some typical households in key growing areas of Xuan Loc, Long Khanh and Cam My districts of Dong Nai province and Chau Duc and Xuyen Moc districts of Ba Ria – Vung Tau province, the survey results show that :

– This year, different from the previous year, pepper is ripe later, so the harvest will be later, harvest around the Lunar New Year, or about the end of February 2016.

– The output is higher than the 2015 crop but lower than the 2014 crop due to unfavorable weather, the period of high flowering period (June / July 2015), the gardens encountered hot weather, lack of water … so even though farmers in two provinces Very experienced in tending pepper gardens, but the results of the garden are “peppercorns” phenomenon, ie the pepper are very few tightly packed fruit, only about 50-60% of the fruit per hour, the length of the seedling is only by two-thirds of 2014.

– Pepper area has increased sharply since early 2015, newly planted gardens are developing well because technically savvy farmers should take good care of, mainly use organic fertilizer (cow manure, pig manure, goat dung, fish manure. etc, incubated for 2-3 years with additional probiotics and fungi treatment with Trichoderma), so the garden has a lot of hardware.

– Pest situation: fast death disease does not show much because farmers know how to localize the disease to avoid spread and the rainy season makes drainage ditch very well. However, nematodes are on the rise.

In general, the 2016 harvest of 2 provinces of Dong Nai and Ba Ria-Vung Tau yielded, the output of the gardens being harvested is estimated to be equal to the 2015 crop (which is a year of a crop failure) and by 70% -80% compared to the 2014 crop. However, some new planted areas have begun to be harvested, so the overall yield is estimated to be similar to that of 2014.
