December 22, 2020, in the city. Dong Ha, Quang Tri province, the National Agricultural Extension Center in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quang Tri province held a Seminar on “Solutions to restore pepper production after storms and floods”.
The seminar aims to help pepper farmers in Quang Tri solve immediate urgent problems in restoring the area of pepper trees affected by storms and floods, and at the same time creating favorable conditions for farmers to be awarded. Discussion with scientists and managers on issues in developing sustainable pepper plants.
Cua pepper garden was affected by the recent storm and flood
Mr. Tran Thanh Hien – Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quang Tri province said: The current pepper growing area of Quang Tri province is about 2,500 hectares. The last long torrential rains damaged 550 hectares of which about 230 hectares were killed. Inundated pepper area shows signs of yellowing, defoliation, burning and death at the rate of 15-20%, in some places 30-40%, some gardens 100% dead. The risk of pepper gardens will continue to die if there is no timely intervention technique.
At the seminar, experts answered the questions of pepper growers, focusing on the following issues: Causes and handling measures for the mass death of pepper gardens after rain; measures to treat diseases in pepper gardens during the rainy season; prevention and treatment of pests and diseases (aphids, nematodes, fungi …); causes and remedy for flower loss; Policies to support pepper dead areas due to storms, floods … Besides, issues related to sustainable pepper production such as: propagation of pepper gardens to be free of diseases; Designing pepper gardens and treating soil before replanting pepper, using fertilizers and probiotics in pepper cultivation, building brands and linking production and consumption of products … are also delegates and farmers. people care and exchange.
Farmers attending the seminar asked questions of experts
TS. Tran Thi Thu Ha – Lecturer of the Faculty of Agronomy, Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry recommends: To restore the pepper area affected by floods and storms, for the time being, it is necessary to treat chemicals to prevent the spread of disease; Field sanitation and diseased pepper gardens treat by treating lime powder, burying and burning diseased parts; Absolutely do not use fallen leaves in the pepper garden to compost as compost; Fertilize multi-medium balance, best use foliar fertilizers to supplement trace elements, enhance phosphorus and potassium fertilizers to increase plant resistance.
According to Master Nguyen Thi Chuc Quynh – Plant Protection Institute, to protect pepper gardens in the present time, people are required to use chemical drugs containing the active ingredient Mancozeb, or Mancozeb + Metalaxyl, or Dimethomorph, … watering the base to destroy the fungus; At the same time, spraying foliar fertilizers with enough trace elements to supplement nutrients for plants, to avoid plant depletion. When the restored tree grows and has new roots, fertilize with a small amount, dilute, prioritize using foliar fertilizers and use bio-products to restore the roots and health of the plant. Note to limit nitrogen fertilization, avoid overexploitation of flowering trees at this time on pepper affected areas due to flooding.
On the afternoon of December 21, 2020, the delegation including experts from the Plant Protection Institute, the National Agricultural Extension Center, the Quang Tri Department of Agriculture and Rural Development visited the pepper gardens at Coc Coc Pepper Cooperative, Cam Nghia Commune, District. Cam Lo to check the actual situation of the damage and the resilience of the pepper gardens after the flood to propose solutions to overcome the pepper garden after floods and storms to recommend to farmers.
Regarding the direction of pepper development in Quang Tri in the coming time, PhD. Tran Thi Thu Ha said: “In the long-term orientation, pepper production in Quang Tri should go in the organic direction, adapting to climate change. Quang Tri pepper has good quality (spicy, weight of seeds), farmers should establish cooperatives to produce organic pepper, improve quality, build product brands to raise prices. treatment and sustainable development ”.
