Reducing area for sustainable pepper development

For the pepper industry to develop sustainably, it is necessary to gradually reduce the pepper area in the coming years.

Vietnam’s pepper production in 2017 increased by nearly 25% compared to the previous year. However, the export of pepper was only about 214,000 tons of all kinds with an estimated turnover of 1.11 billion USD, down 21% compared to 2016.

According to market research by a number of international organizations, pepper prices will continue to decline due to increased supply from major producing countries such as Vietnam, India, Indonesia, and Brazil. Besides, the pressure to increase technical barriers of importing countries such as the EU and the US is increasing, causing the pepper industry to face many difficulties.

Based on the current production status and the forecast of world supply and demand, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development proposes to maintain a stable pepper growing area at about 100,000 – 120,000 ha. By 2025, the pepper growing area will reach 110,000 ha, and by 2030, the area will be stable at 100,000 ha.
