High prices, scarce sources of seedlings

Mr. Tran Quoc Viet (residing in Ea Pok town, Cu M’gar district) sadly said that this year, his family planted coffee seeds a bit late due to high prices and could not buy satisfactory seeds.

“I have more than 1.5 hectares of vacant land and need to buy a large quantity of coffee seeds. However, I went to many stores, most of them had been ordered by people, the few remaining seedlings were small, with curled leaves. Grafted coffee seedlings cost from 14,000 – 16,000 VND/tree,” Mr. Viet added.

Similarly, Mr. Huynh Tan Phat (born 1994), owner of a seedling shop in Quang Phu town (Cu M’gar district, Dak Lak) said that this is the first year “sold out” of coffee seedlings. Because of the scarcity of tree sources, the price of coffee seeds also increased by about 2,000 – 2,500 VND/tree compared to the beginning of the rainy season.

According to Mr. Phat, his store has run out of seedlings since the beginning of the season. Currently, only a few facilities in the Central Highlands Institute of Agriculture and Forestry Science and Technology still produce and graft coffee seedlings.

Warning about deforestation to plant coffee trees

Reply Tien Phong , Mr. Nguyen Nam Hai – Chairman of Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association – said that this year, the price of domestic coffee beans has increased, reaching 70,000 VND/kg. Up to now, the price has begun to decrease but remains at 66,500 – 67,900 VND/kg. High coffee prices make people excited.

Mr. Hai warned that this is the time when coffee prices are the highest in the past 30 years, there needs to be a warning to coffee growing localities, especially the Central Highlands provinces. Localities need to control people living near forests and promptly prevent deforestation to plant coffee trees.

Currently, the most difficult task that Vietnamese coffee businesses encounter is building a map to locate coffee gardens and trace their origin.

Mr. Dinh Van Nam, Director of Quang Son Forestry Company Limited (Dak Nong) said that over the past few months, there have been many people taking advantage of the night to cut down forests. The subjects spread nails and homemade traps, causing many officers to continuously step on them. More violently, some loggers used gasoline to burn down the duty station. To protect the assigned forest area, the company proactively installed cameras, coordinated with police forces and local authorities to patrol, detect and handle many deforestation subjects according to legal regulations.
