The Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA) forecasts that the country’s pepper output this year will decrease by 20% compared to last year with an expected output of 88,000 – 90,000 tons after this organization and its member businesses surveyed 6 key pepper growing provinces in the country.
Six provinces organized by VPA survey teams include Dong Nai, Ba Ria Vung Tau, Binh Phuoc, Dak Nong, Dak Lak and Gia Lai. According to the survey results of the VPA, the new planting area increased sharply, especially in the Central Highlands provinces, where there is still a lot of land. However, in many places where pepper is grown, the pepper gardens have been exploited for more than 10 years, now the pepper plants are old and degraded, farmers are concerned, pay little attention to care, reduce intensive farming, leading to a decrease in yield.
Last June, pepper growing areas were affected by the storm No. 1, then heavy rain lasted, so pepper plants had young buds, many leaves but few flower buds. This is the main cause of the decrease in pepper production in most of the provinces. In addition, due to prolonged heavy rainfall, it causes flooding, rots pepper roots, and causes rapid death.
Therefore, VPA expects the national output to be estimated at 88,000-90,000 tons, down about 20% compared to the 2012 crop.
