Six provinces were surveyed by VPA, including Dong Nai, Ba Ria Vung Tau, Binh Phuoc, Dac Nong, Dak Lak and Gia Lai. According to a report of VPA's survey, the newly planted area has increased sharply, especially in the Central Highlands provinces, where there is still a lot of land available. However, in many pepper growing areas, pepper gardens have been exploited for over 10 years, now pepper trees are old and degraded, farmers are concerned, pay less attention to care and reduce intensive farming, leading to a gradual reduction in productivity.
Last June, pepper growing areas were affected by storm No. 1, after heavy rain lasted, so pepper trees sprout young, with many leaves but few flower buds. This is the main cause of reduced pepper productivity in most provinces. In addition, due to prolonged heavy rainfall, causing inundation, pepper root rot causes rapid death.
Therefore, VPA expects that the country's output is estimated at 88,000 – 90,000 tons, down about 20% compared to 2012.
