Explaining this problem, Mr. Hoang Van Hung in Buon Ho Town said that although the price of coffee is at a high level, due to inflation, all investment costs for coffee such as fertilizer, petrol, labor… all increased strongly; Besides, coffee is a plant that requires a large investment, so even though the price is high, after harvesting, minus all costs, coffee growers do not make much profit.
Meanwhile, pepper is the opposite, the price is nearly 3 times higher than that of coffee, the investment cost is low, so the profit is very large.
Perhaps that is also the reason why the market for buying and selling coffee fields on this occasion seems much gloomier than in 2004, when the price of coffee for the first time spiked above 40,000 VND/kg, people flocked. When buying coffee land, people in the city also hunt to buy more coffee fields in the hope of changing their lives, that need has now been shifted from coffee to pepper.
The rapid increase in pepper prices and standing at the current high level is the main reason for the worry that the agricultural sector in the Central Highlands provinces will be disrupted. Gia Lai is a province famous for pepper, according to the data of Gia Lai Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the pepper area of the whole province has increased by more than 6,000 hectares, of which mainly concentrated in two districts of Chu Se and Chu Se. As for Dak Lak, according to the planning of the agricultural sector, the pepper area is only about 5,000 hectares, but currently the pepper area has exceeded the planning by nearly 1,000 hectares and according to the recommendations of scientists if the agricultural sector If Dak Lak industry does not take measures to prevent the spread of the “pepper whirlwind”, in just a few years, Dak Lak’s pepper area will be the largest in the country and reach about 10,000 hectares.
