The price of pepper in the “capital” of Binh Phuoc from the beginning of the season sold 40,000 VND/kg, now has increased to 50,000 VND/kg in the last days of May 2020. Farmer Truong Van Nghiep, in Tan Phuoc village, Tan Tien commune, Bu Dop district is planting more than 2,000 pepper posts. According to Mr. Nghiep, at the beginning of the season, the price traders bought at the garden was 40,000 VND/kg, his garden earned nearly 1 ton (decreased by nearly 2 tons compared to the 2019 crop due to crop failure) and sold out without storing any kg. I heard from relatives that the price increased by 10,000 VND/kg compared to the beginning of the season, but it was not very happy.

Mr. Nghiep added that due to the low price of pepper in recent years, many pepper growers lived in debt because they missed planting, so they were forced to invest, while the price of fertilizers and labor costs were increasing.

Mr. Nghiep’s pepper garden has been planted for 7-8 years, but the calculation of income is getting less and less. In the 2019 crop, the pepper garden harvested more than 3 tons. However, in the 2020 crop year, the output is approximately 1 ton due to crop failure, plus the selling price at the garden is 40,000 VND/kg, so Mr. Nghiep’s family cannot afford to pay.

Farmer Hoang Thi Hoan also planted 2,000 pepper posts, but due to low prices and great care, neglect caused the pepper garden to die down and now have 1,000 pillars.

According to farmer Hoan, if pepper is increased to at least 100,000 VND/kg, they can live in this profession, but as of now, people in the “capital” of Binh Phuoc cannot get rich with this tree. Ms. Hoan said that due to the expiration of the pepper tree, the family is switching to the goat husbandry model, raising pensions to solve hunger and waiting for the next year’s grain crop and waiting for the price to rise again.

According to statistics of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Binh Phuoc province, the total area of pepper in the province is about 15,000 ha; in which the most concentrated is the “capital” of Loc Ninh and Bu Dop district. However, due to the continuous devaluation and crop failure, the pepper gardens did not take proper care of the technique, leading to a large part of the pepper area that died.

Particularly in 2019, Binh Phuoc province recorded more than 300 hectares of pepper infected with slow death; In which, the peak was Bu Dop district, where many households were “erased” because the pepper garden was neglected by the people, because the “black gold” tree was out of date, and the price dropped…
