According to Mr. Hoang Phuoc Binh, PCT of Chu Se Pepper Association (Gia Lai), in the early days of March, the price of pepper in this area continuously decreased, from over 110,000 VND / kg to 8/3 the price of pepper dropped sharply. to 92,000 – 93,000 VND / kg. Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai Oanh, PCT of Vietnam Pepper Association also confirmed, in the past week, the price of pepper across the country has fallen below 100,000 VND / kg.
Thus, it has been a long time since the price of pepper has fallen below this level. No specific time, but Mr. Hoang Phuoc Binh said that after about 4 years, the new pepper at less than 100,000 VND / kg. By the end of the week, pepper prices rebounded sharply to 103,000 – 105,000 VND / kg. In the beginning of this week, it decreased to around VND 100,000 / kg
Why is pepper price fluctuating erratically and having such a strong downward trend? Mr. Binh said, this year all the forecasts that pepper crop failure, reduce productivity. However, due to the recent increase in pepper area due to high prices, pepper output this year may still be slightly higher than the previous year. On the other hand, the main pepper growing areas are now in the middle of the harvest, the output is relatively abundant, businesses have taken advantage of that opportunity to reduce purchasing prices.
Information from the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA) shows that the global pepper supply is also very abundant in this quarter. Every year, in the first quarter, only three countries harvest pepper is Vietnam, India and Cambodia. This year more Brazil (because the country is delayed to harvest 3 months compared to previous years due to the impact of El Nino). The four countries harvested in the first three months of the year, bringing the supply of pepper in the first quarter to 280,000 tons, accounting for nearly 70% of the total global supply in the whole of 2017.
At the International Spices Conference held in India last February, many suggested that global pepper production this year would increase sharply and is expected to reach 458,500 tons (an increase of 72,500 tons compared to 2016). ).
However, the global pepper market is still considered by international experts to be still bright. Because the demand for pepper is still increasing by 4%, while the output is only increasing by an average of 2% / year. Regarding production, in the coming time, some big pepper growing countries will find it hard to increase production such as India, Indonesia, Malaysia … Weather, global climate is still easy to cause great risks for pepper in many areas. countries, including Vietnam.
Regarding the market, some countries are still increasing strongly the import of Vietnamese pepper such as Germany, China, England, Russia … India, though forecasting an increase in production compared to last year, has not yet met domestic demand. . Many consumers around the world tend to prefer new products from pepper such as salted green pepper, dried green pepper, ground powder …, which are products that Vietnam is researching and promoting investment. manufacturing.
Therefore, VPA thinks that the trend of consumption is going down sharply, only temporarily. Only farmers who need money, do not have good financial resources must sell, many others are still hoarding, waiting for a better price to sell. Because the world supply is still more unstable by the weather, it is likely that this year, the price of pepper may not be as high as in previous years, but it cannot fall too low.
Mr. Hoang Phuoc Binh said that in Gia Lai, only those who grow pepper too need money to sell. Most of the households are still hoarding, waiting for the price to increase to sell. Prices this year may not be as expected, but they expect at least 105,000 VND / kg or more to consider selling.
