The Indian Institute of Spices Research (ICAR-IISR), based in Kozhikode district in Kerala, has developed a high-yielding black pepper variety named ‘IISR Chandra’. The institute has also completed sequencing the breed’s genome.

Usually, new pepper varieties are created by crossing two existing pepper varieties. However, IISR used a different approach during the development of IISR Chandra. Initially, Cholamundi and Thommankodi varieties were combined to create hybrid varieties. This hybrid variety is then crossed with the Thommankodi variety to retain all the desirable characteristics of the parent breed.

‘IISR Chandra’ variety is more optimal than other available varieties and can yield 7.5 kg of pepper per pillar.

R Dinesh, Director, ICAR-IISR, said the new variety is expected to be a game changer for the country’s black pepper economy. Because it is superior and has the ability to replace some popular black pepper varieties.

To promote widespread adoption of IISR Chandra, the institute is expanding production licenses to individuals, farmers and nurseries. The agency plans to execute eight licensing agreements for commercial production of this new pepper variety, according to Thehindubusinessline.
