Cambodia’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said that the country exported a total of 14,562 tonnes of pepper in the first half of this year, up 398.67% year-on-year.

Mr. Mak Ny, Chairman of the Cambodia Pepper and Spices Federation (CPSF), said that demand and prices of pepper started to increase due to reduced production in Vietnam, the region’s leading producer and exporter.

Vietnam orders pepper from Cambodia to add to its stockpile, so pepper prices are expected to improve in the near future. This is expected to have a positive effect on pepper growers who have lost interest in the crop, prompting them to return to production.

Cambodia’s non-GI pepper price has recorded a significant recovery, to 14,000 riel/kg (equivalent to 3.50 USD/kg) compared to 10,000 riel/kg last year.

Members of the Cambodia Pepper and Spices Federation continue to buy pepper from farmers as planned, but purchasing activity is somewhat affected by domestic and international shipping prices, especially sea freight. , has now tripled.
