Update pepper information
In the third quarter, black pepper prices in Vietnam’s domestic market decreased by a total of 3 – 6% (5,000 – 9,500 VND/kg) compared to the end of the second quarter. The price of this item then continued to decrease by 1 – 3% (1,000 – 4,000 VND/kg) from the beginning of October until now.
In the export market, according to updates from IPC, export pepper prices in Vietnam as well as many other countries have also decreased in recent weeks.
The market is under downward pressure as agricultural companies, agents and intermediaries are actively selling black pepper. This activity is mainly driven by liquidity needs, as sellers seek to raise capital to invest in coffee, an agricultural product that is in harvest season.
The fact that Brazil and Indonesia are in the harvest season, while world demand is not increasing strongly, along with China not buying much also contributes to the fall in prices.
However, low domestic inventories keep pepper prices high. Currently, domestic pepper prices are still 80% higher than at the beginning of the year and double the same period last year. Pepper and coffee are the two agricultural products whose prices have increased the most in recent times.
In the structure of Vietnam’s export pepper types in the first 9 months of the year, whole black pepper continued to account for the largest proportion with 73.6%, reaching 147,822 tons. However, compared to the same period last year, the amount of black pepper exported decreased by 8.8%.
In contrast, exports of ground black pepper reached 28,696 tons, a sharp increase of 43.2% and accounting for 14% of the proportion. Next was whole white pepper reaching 15,106 tons, accounting for 7.5% and down 2.2%; Ground white pepper reached 7,832 tons, accounting for 3.9% and increasing by 43.1%; Finally, pepper soaked in vinegar, wood, pinhead, green, pink… accounts for 0.7%.
