According to data from the US International Trade Commission (USITC), US pepper imports in August continued to decrease for the 6th consecutive month compared to the same period last year to 5,900 tons, equivalent to a decrease of 31%.

Accumulated in the first 8 months of the year, this country’s pepper imports decreased by 25.9% over the same period last year, reaching only 46,216 tons.

In particular, import volume from most main markets decreased in the first 8 months of the year with Vietnam decreasing by 20.1%, down to 36,372 tons and accounting for 79% of the market share.

Next is India with 3,953 tons, down 4.2% and accounting for 8% market share; Indonesia reached 2,219 tons, down 58.4%; Brazil had the strongest decrease with a decrease of up to 70.5%, reaching 1,455 tons…

US pepper imports from some countries, although not much, increased very strongly such as Zimbabwe reaching 315 tons, an increase of 3.2 times over the same period last year; Mexico increased by 34.2%; South Africa increased by 56.8%; Cambodia especially increased nearly 18 times to 77 tons compared to only 4 tons in the same period.

Like many other products, inflation and rising interest rates are still the main factors restraining the demand for imported pepper in the US market.

In the US, inflation continues to be hotter than forecast, despite the restraining impact of previous interest rate increases by the US Federal Reserve (FED).

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the US consumer price index (CPI) in September increased by 3.7% over the same period last year, equal to August and higher than experts’ forecasts.

At the same time, inflation is still much higher than the Fed’s 2% target. High inflation and interest rates may cause consumers to continue cutting back on spending.
