Update pepper information

According to information from the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), Vietnam provides about 50% of global pepper output, but due to a sharp decline in area, Vietnam’s pepper output in 2024 may be at its lowest level in many years.

VPSA forecasts that Vietnam’s pepper output this year will decrease by 10% to 170,000 tons compared to last year, the lowest level in the last 5 years. Of which, Dak Nong accounts for 41.2%; Dak Lak accounts for 28.2%; Gia Lai accounts for 7.6%; Ba Ria Vung Tau 7.1%…

Currently, the country has 100,000 pepper farmers, 200 export enterprises and 35 pepper factories, according to the February 2024 Pepper Market Report.

According to Dak Nong Provincial Department of Agricultural Development, the whole province currently has 34,000 hectares of pepper, with an output of nearly 70,000 tons. In recent years, pepper farming has had many positive changes, gradually shifting towards organic and ecologically diverse gardens.

The association of pepper production with quality certification and product consumption contracts is also increasingly expanding. By 2023, the whole province will have 23 establishments and models applying standards in production, with a scale of over 3,000 hectares.

According to Dak Lak Newspaper, the average productivity of the entire district in the 2024 pepper crop is expected to reach about 3.2 tons/ha, with an estimated output of about 13,000 tons. In the district, pepper trees are grown mainly in two communes Ea Ning and Ea Bhok, forming concentrated raw material areas.

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Cu Kuin district said that the peak time for pepper harvesting takes place around February and March every year. After harvest, farmers mainly use natural drying, with few households using ovens. During the consumption process, households mainly sell to collectors or purchasing establishments in the district, with the main product still being black pepper.

Faced with rising pepper prices, local authorities encourage people not to massively expand their area, but to persevere in sustainable farming to withstand price fluctuations and epidemics.
