Update pepper information

Data from the General Administration of Customs of China shows that by the end of November 2023, China imported 8,256 tons of pepper, an increase of 1.8% over the same period in 2022.

Of which, China imported 3,841 tons of pepper from Indonesia, down 10.9% over the same period and accounting for 45.7% of the market share.

Imports from Vietnam reached 2,601 tons, an increase of 11.9%, but this number is only 5% compared to the volume of 59,073 tons statistics by the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA).

The reason for this difference is because Vietnam’s pepper exports to China still mainly follow unofficial channels and are not included in the statistics of the Chinese Customs Authority. In addition to Indonesia and Vietnam, China also imports a small amount of pepper from Brazil, Malaysia, India…

Pepper is mainly used as a spice and in the food industry, a product favored by Chinese consumers and widely used in many localities in the country.

Some localities in China that have a large demand for importing Vietnamese pepper include Sichuan, Hunan, Hubei and some provinces in Northern China.

In 2024, demand for pepper in China is expected to remain high due to consumption habits.

In addition, the strong recovery of domestic tourism also leads to increased consumer demand and use of food and beverage services.

Besides, this year’s winter is cold and long, causing many people to turn to hot and spicy dishes such as hot pot, grilled…, in which pepper is one of the indispensable spices, according to a new report. of Department of Import and Export (Ministry of Industry and Trade).
