Pepper imports from the European Union (EU) have decreased by nearly 25% (20,591 tons) in the first 10 months of 2023, reaching only 62,689 tons.
Of which, imports from foreign countries reached 41,111 tons, down 23.3%, accounting for 67.2% market share; within the EU is 23,863 tons, down 16% over the same period in 2022 and accounting for 38.1%, according to data from the European Statistics Agency (Eurostat).
Because Europe’s climate is not suitable for pepper, the region’s consumption mainly depends on imports. Spice manufacturers in Europe often import this spice item for processing and packaging and then consume, or re-export to member countries and the world.
In the first 10 months of 2023, the largest foreign pepper supply markets for the EU include Vietnam with 62.3% market share, Brazil 18.4%, India 5.7%…
Specifically, the EU imported 26,248 tons of pepper from Vietnam, down 16.2% over the same period in 2022; from Brazil reached 7,741 tons, down 38.9%; India reached 2,417 tons, down 16.7%…
For Vietnam, after the Vietnam – EU Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) took effect, the import tax on ground or crushed pepper (HS code 0904) exported by Vietnam to the EU decreased from 4% to 0. %.
This gives Vietnamese pepper many advantages over other suppliers such as Indonesia, Malaysia, India… when exporting to the EU.
Besides, the quality of Vietnam’s pepper is also improving day by day and meeting market requirements.
As of mid-October 2023, Europe had 42 warnings for pepper products and some other spices, including 17 warnings for black pepper products from Brazil due to Salmonella contamination.
In Vietnam, only 2 cases were recorded for chlorfenapyr and hexaconazole on pepper and chili.
The Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) stated that the decline in EU pepper imports is expected to occur in the short term due to the impact of a weakened economy, high inflation and tensions. Geopolitics in Eastern Europe continues to escalate. When the EU economy recovers, demand for pepper will increase.
