While many other agricultural products are facing many difficulties when exporting to the world market, the purchasing contracts are being reduced, the customers are pushing the price …, the pepper still grows strongly and firmly moves into the market. world. For the first time in many years, the first time spending is over 1 billion USD.

Most likely to finish 6 years in advance

According to MARD, the export volume of pepper in August is estimated at 6,000 tons, earning 56 million USD, bringing the export volume of pepper in the first 8 months to 126,000 tons, reaching a turnover of 926 million USD, up 23.9% in volume. and increased by 38.2% in value over the same period in 2013. Entering September, continued to maintain a stable performance in both price, export volume, pepper marked a record. Statistics of the General Department of Customs show that, in the first half of September, domestic enterprises exported 3,556 tons of pepper, valued at US $ 34.081 million, bringing the export turnover of the whole country from the beginning of the year to the present. 136,000 tons, worth 1,022 billion USD. So compared to the whole of 2013, the amount of pepper exported to the middle of September was nearly 4,000 tons, the export was higher than 100 million.

The International Pepper Association (IPC) forecasts that from now to the end of the year, the supply of pepper to the world will be in shortage, unable to meet demand because major exporting countries such as India and Indonesia reduce production. -20%. Once again, this will be an opportunity for Vietnam's pepper industry to accelerate exports. Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA) forecasts that pepper export this year will probably increase sharply compared to last year. It is likely that in 2014, pepper exports will reach 1.3 billion USD – this is a figure equivalent to the pepper export target of 2020 set by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development when the Planning for development of Vietnam's pepper industry to 2020. , vision to 2030 has just been approved.

Accordingly, the industry's target is to 2020, with a vision to 2030, the pepper growing area of the whole country will remain stable at 50,000 ha, the productivity will reach 30 quintals / ha, the output will reach 140,000 tons and the pepper products. high quality reached 90%, export turnover reached 1.2-1.3 billion USD. Thus, if the end of the industry finishes the target of 1.3 billion USD, it means that the goal is reached early 6 years. If so, perhaps the newly approved Pepper Industry Development Plan will need to be revised to keep pace with reality.

At present, pepper of Vietnam is present in more than 90 countries and territories. Vietnam accounts for about 30% of world pepper production and accounts for about 50% of world pepper export volume. Although the country joined the International Pepper Community (IPC) at the latest (in March 2005, it was only approved by the United Nations to be an official member of the Community), but the role and position of Vietnam's pepper industry step by step was raised when countries began to take Vietnamese prices for reference.

Recently, many pepper export markets of Vietnam achieved strong growth such as the United States, up 25.7% in volume and 35.19% in value; Singapore increased by 80.74% in volume and increased by 2.27 times in value; United Arab Emirates increased by 63.24% in volume and by 93.63% in value; The Indian market increased by 85.68% in volume and more than doubled in value compared to the same period in 2013.

Coordinate smoothly, harmonize interests

The pepper industry has achieved many successes, maintaining the leading position in the world in terms of export pepper volume and from 2001 and maintaining up to now because we have an average pepper productivity of over 2 tons / ha, belongs to the most productive group in the world.

The second advantage is stability in quality and output. Although some pepper producing countries have reduced their production due to low prices in recent years, Vietnam has maintained its area and output. At the same time, the quality of pepper is increasing thanks to more attention and investment in post-harvest processing.

The third strength is the ability to minimize exports through intermediaries, which enhances direct exports to raw material suppliers for spice processing plants in other countries. In addition, differences in harvesting time with major cultivated areas in the world also create advantages in regulating purchasing and consumption for Vietnamese pepper. While India and Sri Lanka harvest early from December last year to March next year, Brazil and Indonesia harvest later from July to November. Vietnam usually harvests from January to May in which the amount of The main focus is in February and March.

Mr. Do Ha Nam, VPA Chairman, recommended that in the current situation of reducing supply and recovery prices, Vietnam's pepper industry should focus on sustainable development. Firstly, it is necessary to stabilize the area and output of pepper in the country. With the price recovery signal, farmers can re-invest heavily in existing areas or newly plantations. In the medium term, it may cause oversupply as in the past, leading to a stagnation of the whole commodity industry in the future. Planting area is recommended to maintain at the current level, around 50,000 ha.

It is necessary to continue raising the level of processing technology to reach the quality of pepper ensuring food safety. Gradually increase the proportion of white pepper in the structure of export pepper to improve the value and profit of the industry. Do not encourage intensive farming to increase productivity, but maintain stable productivity as at present, increase the life of pepper gardens by farming methods and integrated disease control.

Activities are needed to coordinate and unify the export of pepper among businesses to achieve the highest common interest based on accurate market forecasts and information. Enterprises need to link with the banking system to have enough capital to buy and store raw materials at the beginning of the crop to improve production and business efficiency of the whole industry.
