If the value of pepper export turnover to India in the first 6 months of 2011 was only US $ 21.27 million, the value of export turnover in the first 6 months of this year soared to US $ 30.95 million, equivalent to an increase of 45.53 %.
The average export price of the first 6 months of last year reached US $ 4,997 / ton, the average price of the same period this year has increased to 6,613 USD / ton, equivalent to an increase of 32.34%, an impressive figure.
In the past, India was the world's leading pepper exporter. However, this position was ceded to Vietnam because of its shrinking area, declining production because of extensive farming by pepper farmers, low productivity and increasing pests and diseases on pepper.
For export pepper, India has imported pepper from Southeast Asian countries and neighboring Sri Lanka to re-export as well as to supplement domestic consumption.
According to the page Business Line, India's exports in the first 6 months of 2012 reached 10,197 tonnes of pepper compared to 9,059 tonnes in the same period last year. In contrast, the import volume for the first 6 months was 6,730 tons of pepper compared to 6,288 tons imported in the same period in 2011.
Industry officials estimated that Indian pepper production in 2012 dropped to about 43,000 tons to 45,000 tons, compared with 49,000 tons last year.
India is currently the third largest pepper producing country in the world after Vietnam and Indonesia.
