Preliminary statistics of VPSA, in April 2024, Vietnam exported 26,245 tons of pepper of all kinds; including 23,705 tons of black pepper and 2,540 tons of white pepper with a turnover of 116.5 million USD. Compared to last month, export volume increased by 2.2% and value increased by 5.2%. The average export price of black pepper in the month reached 4,292 USD/ton, an increase of 4%; White pepper reached 6,034 USD/ton, an increase of 6.5% compared to March 2024.
In the first 4 months of the year, Vietnam exported 83,067 tons of pepper of all kinds, with a total export turnover of 352 million USD. Compared to the same period last year, export volume decreased by 19.4%, however turnover increased by 10.3%. The average export price of black pepper was 4,065 USD/ton, white pepper reached 5,678 USD/ton, an increase of 19.4% for black pepper and 14.5% for white pepper respectively over the same period last year.
Asia currently accounts for 36.2% of Vietnam’s total pepper export output, however in the first 4 months of 2024 export output to this region has decreased by 52% compared to the same period in 2023; Of which, the Chinese market decreased the most, down 95.2%, and the UAE decreased 23%. India is currently the market importing the most Vietnamese pepper in Asia in the first 4 months of the year with 5,552 tons, accounting for 6.7% and increasing 23.9% over the same period. Exports also increased in some markets such as Korea increased by 157.4%, Pakistan increased by 59.7% and the Philippines increased by 18.5%.
Pepper exports to American countries increased by 40.6% and accounted for 30.2% of the export market share; Of which, the US is Vietnam’s largest single pepper export market with an output of 22,774 tons, an increase of 45.2% over the same period in 2023 and accounting for 27.4% of total export output.
The European region accounted for 26.8% of Vietnam’s pepper export market share, an increase of 33.6% compared to the same period last year; Of which, leading the German market increased by 104.7%; The Netherlands increased by 52.8%, Russia increased by 68.7%.
Meanwhile, in the African region, exports decreased by 4.7%. However, the traditional Egyptian market is showing positive signs as exports increased by 10.7% to 1,977 tons after the government provided foreign currency support to pay for imported goods.
In parallel with exports, Vietnamese businesses also import a quantity of pepper to serve processing and export to third countries. In April 2024, Vietnam imported 4,281 tons of pepper of all kinds; Of which, 4,085 tons of black pepper and 196 tons of white pepper, total import turnover reached 15.6 million USD, compared to the previous month, the import volume increased by 14.9%.
In the first 4 months of 2024, Vietnam imported 12,269 tons of pepper, including 11,748 tons of black pepper and 521 tons of white pepper, compared to the same period last year, the import volume increased by 20.5%. Brazil is the largest pepper supplier to Vietnam, followed by Cambodia and Indonesia.
Regarding prices, in the domestic market, pepper prices on May 8 remained high, on average from 102,000 – 104,000 VND/kg. On the world market, according to the International Pepper Association (IPC), at the end of the trading session on May 7, the price of Vietnamese black pepper was stable at 4,400 USD/ton with 500 g/l type, at 4,500 USD. /ton with 550 g/l grade and white pepper price at 6,500 USD/ton.
