Among the agricultural products exported in the world leading position of Vietnam such as cashew nuts, coffee, rice … the pepper has the lowest export turnover, in 2012 it was 794 million USD, but there were many advantages that other items are not easy to get.
With about 50,000 ha, accounting for 2.5% of the total of nearly 2 million ha of 5 industrial crops but pepper accounting for over 8% of export value, of which export value of pepper about 4 times higher than rubber, 3.8 times the cashews, 2.6 times coffee, 6 times tea.
Already know the moderation
Vietnamese pepper has basic and earlier steps than other agricultural products when farmers grow pepper has surpassed the psychological level: prices were high, but the price was reduced to sell out massively, so importers forced prices. About 6 years now, pepper Vietnam has increasingly shown its leading role in the world market in prices so prices have almost gone up. In 2007, farmers sold about 30,000 VND / kg, until 2008 was 50,000 VND / kg, then 80,000 VND / kg and 2 years now fluctuating around 120,000 VND / kg.
According to Do Ha Nam, President of the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA), it is worth mentioning that the “rule” of price fluctuations over a few years of the pepper period has almost been broken when the farmers themselves are temporary storage and sale. However, it is not subjective and satisfied with the achieved results. Although leading the world market, there is another reality, price pepper Vietnam has always been lower than the prices of India, Brazil, Malaysia … In 2012, the price of Vietnam black pepper was lower than the price of other countries about 295 USD / ton, in the first 3 months of 2013, this gap was more than 380 USD / ton. White pepper Vietnam in 2012 sold an average of 9,999 USD / ton, lower than the world price of 89 USD / ton but last time sold for 8,742 – 8,874 USD / ton, lower from 450 – 500 USD / ton. Explaining this, Mr. Do Ha Nam said that the difference is mainly due to export standards of countries like India and Brazil to meet ASTA standard (sterilized according to international food safety and hygiene standards of USA), so prices are higher, and Vietnam still treats them with steam. Therefore, ASTA standard price is always higher than USD 200 – 300 / ton.
A few hundred million dollars more to export per year if …
Despite a fairly radical step, Vietnamese pepper has not been completely out of the general situation of other export agricultural products of Vietnam, that is the raw export is still very high. In 2012, more than 85% was found black pepper export.
According to Mr. Do Ha Nam, if deep processing, the value added is much greater when exporting (possibly up to hundreds of millions of USD / year). Therefore, the pepper industry can reach an export turnover of over US $ 1 billion / year and more importantly, consumers of countries that know Vietnam pepper more, when nowadays even though they account for more than 50% of the delivered volume. However, few people know that it is Vietnamese pepper (this is similar to coffee), VPA sets out three directions that the pepper industry needs to take next time. That is, firstly, enterprises need to have a strategy and determination to gradually change the export rate black pepper to export White pepper The higher it is, the more value it brings to the country. Average export price White pepper in 2012 was 9,176 USD / ton compared with 6,390 USD / ton black pepper. The difference in value between these two types of pepper is up to 70%. The second direction is to increase production of ASTA pepper (according to US standards). The price of black pepper due to steam treatment was lower than the standard of ASTA 200 – 300 USD / ton. 2 countries Malaysia and Indonesia export very strong ASTA pepper, Vietnamese enterprises have not been able to compete when Vietnam's pepper industry is still young compared to these countries. Currently, the percentage of ASTA pepper exported by Vietnam to Europe and America is only about 15%. Therefore, what needs to be done is that VPA as well as each business itself must be more active in promoting trade, seeking markets to be able to improve exports of this high value ASTA pepper even more.
If the two directions above can be implemented in the short term, the third direction is more difficult, but VPA said that it is impossible not to do so, it is necessary to boost the export of pepper. Many foreign businesses have successfully processed pepper powder in Vietnam. They also import black pepper from other countries for processing in Vietnam and then re-export to supply to many supermarkets in the world.
According to VPA, this is the need for a gradual shift to focus investment, in which jobs must first be built for the brand and should be aware that food safety and hygiene is a very important issue. Industry pepper There are still many issues to be solved, a lot of work to be done pepper Becoming a product not only drives the selling price but it is more important to increase the value of the product pepper Vietnam.
Chu Se Pepper Association (Gia Lai) has just established a Center to connect materials pepper to reduce intermediate levels. This center will help businesses buy and sell directly with farmers with the goal of farmers selling at high prices, businesses buying quality goods. The association has equipped a set of test samples certified by the Center for Standards and Quality Technology 3. If successful, this will be a model not only to ensure quality, to limit intermediaries but also to help traceability of goods. Hoang Phuoc Binh, Vice Chairman of Chu Se Pepper Pepper Association
