The export target of 41 billion USD is feasible for the agricultural sector with many bright spots such as exporting wood, rice, seafood and vegetables.

In the Resolution of the Government’s regular meeting in September 2020, in order to continue the successful implementation of the “dual goal”, strive to achieve the highest level of targets and targets by 2020, of which economic growth will reach 2 – 3%, the Government requires the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to focus on directing the best exploitation of export markets, especially the EU market, striving to complete the annual agricultural product export target of 41 billion USD.

Export of vegetables and fruits in the first 9 months of 2020 reached nearly 2.5 billion USD, ranking 3rd among 5 items bringing in over 2 billion USD in the last 3 quarters. Photo: Quoc Tuan

At the same time, closely monitor weather and natural disasters, proactively direct agricultural production to reach set targets, minimize damage caused by natural disasters. Promote production, especially rice production, pig herd re-herd, exploitation and aquaculture, afforestation, logging; continue to control diseases in plants and animals well. Promote trade promotion activities, open markets, including focusing on solving difficulties for catfish farming.

In fact, data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development shows that, for the first 9 months of the year, despite the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic, the export turnover of the agricultural sector is estimated at $ 30.05 billion, up 1, 6% over the same period in 2019.

In which, the main agricultural product group is estimated at nearly 13.6 billion USD; husbandry is estimated at 231 million USD; seafood is estimated at over 6.0 billion USD; main forest products reached about 9.1 billion USD, up 13.4% …

More remarkable, there are 7 groups, export items over 1 billion USD and 5 groups, items with export value over 2 billion USD, including: Wood and wood products: 8.5 billion USD; shrimp: 2.75 billion USD; rice: 2.5 billion USD; cashew nuts: 2.3 billion USD; coffee: 2.2 billion USD

In which, wood and forest products are considered by the leaders of the agricultural sector to be a bright spot in the picture of agricultural economy.

Specifically, in the 9 months of crisis because of the COVID-19 epidemic, the wood industry continued to have impressive export growth in many markets such as: the United States increased by more than 835 million USD over the same period in 2019, equivalent to an increase of 26, first%; China: Increasing more than 79 million USD over the same period in 2019, equivalent to an increase of 10.6%); Canada: An increase of nearly 12 million USD over the same period in 2019, equivalent to 10.3%; Thailand: Increased by more than 5 million USD over the same period in 2019, equivalent to 20.6%.

“In the last months of the year, Vietnam’s wood and wood products exports will continue to grow, and the total turnover of the year 2020 is expected to reach over 12 billion USD because countries increase spending and shopping during the Christmas season. Meanwhile, the disease situation in Vietnam has been under control, domestic production has gradually returned to normal, the Government of Vietnam has gradually restored international flights ”Mr. Do Xuan Lap, Chairman of Vietnam Timber and Forest Products Association, said.

Not only wood, aquatic products, rice, fruits and vegetables are also considered to have open markets. “With 80,000 tons of rice including 30,000 tons of fragrant rice granted tax incentives to the EU, the room for rice exports to the EU is huge”, said MARD leaders.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Quoc Doanh also added that, after more than 2 months, EVFTA took effect and was enforced, many export products of Vietnam have had positive changes in the EU market. In particular, recently, we witnessed the export ceremony of agricultural products to the EU taking advantage of incentives under the EVFTA Agreement such as shipments: 30 tons of frozen shrimp products on September 11; 100 tons of passion fruit exported to Germany on September 16; fruits (including 2,200 barrels, and 15 tons of pomelos and dragon fruits) are exported to England, Germany and the Netherlands; 126 tons of fragrant rice was exported to the Czech Republic on September 22.

Thus, the above optimistic signals can show that the export level of 41 billion USD is feasible for the agricultural sector. Agriculture continues to be a rare bright spot in the context of a serious decline in many economic sectors due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
