Growing pepper on live pillars is a new economic model applied by farmers in Chu Puh district in the last 5 years. With practical effects that this approach brings, many localities in the district have been actively developing, gradually replicating the model. Ia Hrú is considered to be such a typical commune.

Years ago, when the model of growing pepper on live pillars began to appear, the people of Ia Hrú were still afraid and skeptical about the actual economic benefits that it brought. Therefore, instead of bravely applying, many farmers are still loyal to the old way of growing pepper on dead pillars such as wood, bricks and concrete. The fact that growing pepper on dead trees in shaded conditions can achieve high yields, but is accompanied by rapid depletion due to excessive fruit production and the outbreak of many dangerous diseases. destroying pepper gardens.

The model of growing pepper on living pillars is being developed and replicated

According to Le Lai, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ia Hrú commune, planting pepper on living pillars is a sustainable cultivation method, while shading and extending the time to exploit pepper gardens, limiting dangerous diseases and reducing Initial investment costs. Mr. Lai also said that the commune People's Committee often cooperates with the Department of Agriculture and District Extension Station to organize training sessions to propagate and guide people to understand and believe in the new model.

From the experimental planting, the people of Ia Hrú commune have been gradually developing and replicating the model. Up to now, the area of pepper grown on live trees of the whole commune is about 30 hectares. “Usually, live pillars are planted 1-3 years before planting pepper. If planting pepper in the same year with the live pillar, it is imperative to plant a temporary pillar because the survival pillar was small then, there was no room for climbing pepper. Temporary poles must be good for pepper to be able to climb for 2-3 years before the poles live big enough for the stick to climb, ”said Mr. Lai.

Many farmers use hybrid acacia as a living pillar for pepper

The popular types of live pillars that growers use are hips, acacia, cages, cotton … grown by branches or seedlings. Like these crops, farmers mainly buy in HCMC. Pleiku and Dak Lak, except for most trees, which are self-seeded by seeds. Each tree used as a living pillar for pepper has its own uses and strengths. According to many farmers, acacia is the most dominant plant because the leaves of this tree are small, capable of shading but still scattering to light down for photosynthesis. Besides, acacia is a legume so it does not compete nitrogen with pepper and has great advantages very fast and has a long life. When cutting off branches, acacia tree does not die and its branches and leaves can be used to feed livestock such as pigs, buffaloes, cows and goats…

Mr. Hai is applying the model of growing pepper on a living pole

Mr. Le Duc Hai is the owner of more than 2 hectares of pepper gardens. Also being consulted and known about the model of growing pepper on living pillars from the early days, he is still afraid and hesitant to apply. In 2010, after seeing the effect of the model from a friend in Dak Lak and the surrounding people, Mr. Hai started to plant it. While producing, he has learned from experience from those who have been successful before. Mr. Hai shared: “The type of living pillar that I choose is a cage tree, although it is big but has a long life, it is difficult to die. Compared to planting on dead pillars as before, I find living pillars for pepper can save costs while limiting the incidence of pepper diseases, yield is also higher. With 2 ha available, on average, I get about 10 tons every year ”.

In order to ensure that pepper gardens planted on poles live well, uniformly, with high yields, according to Mr. Hai, pepper growers need to pay attention to technical measures on planting time, planting distance between lake trees. pepper and live poles. In addition, care is also very important, affecting the yield of harvest.

Currently, deforestation for timber as a pillar is a quite painful problem in Chu Pư. The development and expansion of the model of planting live trees as a pillar for pepper not only brings high economic benefits to farmers but also contributes to limiting the situation of increasingly damaged natural forests being exhausted.
