According to Electronic magazine of Rural EconomicsMs. Hoang Thi Lien, President of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), said that Vietnam is a large producer and exporter of spices in the world, accounting for 11% of the global market share in 2022. , which ranks first in pepper production and export.

However, pepper area and output are decreasing. In 2020, the area will reach more than 130,000 hectares, in 2023 it will be 120,000 hectares, and the output will reach 190,000 tons. Currently, the profit of durian is 20 times higher than that of pepper.

Therefore, it is predicted that the area of pepper will decrease as farmers cut it down to switch to durian cultivation.

According to Ms. Lien, this is normal when considering economic thinking. Currently, durian trees are having outstanding economic efficiency when officially exported to China.

For pepper gardens, replanting takes place regularly when dead, old or low-yield trees appear, people can replace them with durian, jackfruit, avocado…

People are the ones who decide what crops to replant on their land, but it should be noted that China grants growing area codes for pure durians. Durian grown intercropped with other crops is not eligible for export codes to China.

Faced with the situation of pepper prices fluctuating up and down over the years, the Agriculture sector has advised farmers to be cautious in converting crops and focus on caring for and restoring pepper areas with stable productivity, in order to develop sustainable development of pepper plants”.

According to many farmers in the Central Highlands, to reduce investment costs, pepper growers mobilize family workers to harvest or exchange harvesters in the neighborhood and region.

In addition, pepper should be intercropped with coffee, durian, avocado… to increase economic efficiency on the same production area.

However, to develop pepper sustainably, in addition to price expectations, farmers recommend that all levels and branches strengthen management and control of the fertilizer and plant protection drug market, and have stable solutions for the production of pepper. The prices of these products are intended to help farmers have a stable income and feel secure in production.
