So far, the EU has dropped to the fourth position in the top 5 largest pangasius export markets of Vietnam (after China – Hong Kong, USA and ASEAN). In the first 5 months of this year, pangasius export value to EU markets decreased continuously. The Netherlands is the largest pangasius export market in the bloc and is the largest import market of pangasius products. The price of frozen tra catfish to the Netherlands decreased from 2.94 USD / kg (QIV / 2019) to about 2.67 USD / kg (QI / 2020).

Earlier this year, the import demand slowed down, and Covid-19 epidemic impacted on pangasius export to this market, the strongest since March 2020. Pangasius material prices in the country decreased due to the general trend when the largest pangasius export market of Vietnam, China, was delayed. This led to a decrease in pangasius export value to the EU.

In 2019, the EU's import structure of white-skinned fish continues to give much favor to white-flesh fish products such as frozen Cod fish (HS 030471); Alaska pollock fish filter (HS 030475); Frozen Cod fish (HS code 030363); frozen Hake fish bile (HS code 030474) … Frozen tra fish still occupies a modest proportion in the structure of importing white meat fish in this market, less than 5% of the total import value.

In the first 5 months of this year, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain and Belgium were the 4 largest pangasius export markets of Vietnamese enterprises. In particular, the Netherlands alone accounted for 30% of total pangasius export value to the EU. During this period, Vietnam exported outstanding tra catfish products such as frozen breaded catfish; frozen tra catfish, frozen cut / cut pangasius, frozen nugget pangasius fillet, frozen salmon roll salmon fillets, skewered tra fish fillets, frozen whole tra fish … to Ha market Lan.

Currently, there are more than 40 enterprises exporting Pangasius to EU market, in which, there are 25 enterprises exporting Pangasius to big market in the region which is Netherlands. 3 enterprises: NTSF, VINH HOAN CORP; VINH QUANG is the 3 companies with the largest pangasius export value to the Netherlands during this time.

Up to this point, the COVID-19 epidemic continues to be hot in Europe and seriously affects the economies of many countries, consumer spending, trade, transportation, supply chains, etc. 5/2020, the EU has prepared a scenario for an economic recession to take place this year. The euro zone economy is forecast to decline to a record level of about 7.75% by 2020, making it difficult for all sectors to recover. This forecast also impacts on Pangasius export to EU this year, most likely, the value of Vietnam Pangasius export to this region will continue to decrease in the coming months.
