According to the International Pepper Community (IPC), in the global pepper export market this year, India has fallen to fifth place, behind Vietnam, Indonesia, Brazil, and Malaysia. It is known that last year, India ranked fourth.
This year, the estimated export turnover of pepper from India, the world's leading exporter in the past two decades, is only 17,500 tons, compared with 108,000 tons from Vietnam, 53,000 tons from Indonesia, 27,500 tons from Brazil, and 20,000 tons from Malaysia. Three years ago, pepper exports from Indonesia and Brazil were still far behind India.
In the last 2-3 years, pepper prices in India are often higher than in other countries producing 1,000 USD / ton. Product quality from countries like Sri Lanka is also better than Indian pepper. Vietnam offers ASTA pepper at a lower price than Malabar Indian pepper. As a result, India has fallen behind in traditional markets such as the EU and US.
India's pepper exports in the first 10 months of the year were only equal to 16% of Vietnam's exports, the world's largest pepper producing and exporting country. Vietnam has exported 102,759 tons of pepper, while India exported only 16,000 tons. In the same period last year, India's exports reached 20,000 tons.
Vietnam's exports include 88,435 tons of black pepper and 14,324 tons of white pepper. Although exports decreased by 7.4% over the same period last year, the export turnover increased by 9.5% to 697 million USD. Among them, black pepper accounted for 564.5 million USD, while white pepper was 132.2 million USD.
The average export price of black pepper in the first 10 months was 6,382 USD / ton. For white pepper is 9,229 USD / ton. Compared to the same period last year, the price of black pepper was higher than 1,016 USD / ton, while the price of white pepper was higher than 1,427 USD / ton.
For Vietnamese pepper, the US is the largest import market (14,226 tons, accounting for 13.8%). The Gulf Cooperation Council, Germany, the Netherlands, Singapore, India, and Egypt also import huge quantities of pepper from Vietnam. For white pepper alone, Germany was the largest importer (3,371 tons), followed by the Netherlands (2,040 tons), and the US (1,517 tons).
In the next crop, according to IPC estimates, global black pepper production is likely to reach 316,832 tons. This figure is lower than last year's output of 327,090 tons. But exporters expect production in the coming season will reach 359,832 tons.
According to IPC estimates, global pepper exports next year will reach 214,541 tons. Vietnam is expected to remain at the top with 85,000 tons of black pepper and 10,000 tons of white pepper. India is likely to export 25,000 tons with 23,200 tons of black pepper. The IPC said that, including 16,200 tons of pepper from five non-IPC countries including China, Thailand, Madagascar, Cambodia, and Ecuador, global pepper exports will reach 230,741 tons.
